Default Leica M6 rewind mechanism stiff

While rewinding film on my Leica M6 i exprience resistance which makes the rewinding crank very stiff. Though i succeed to have the film back in the cassette, still it seems that it is to much of ressistance and on long run may result even in damage. I do all as need to be done as i used leica M3 , M2 and M4 without such problem.
Could be my camera has foult - yet it was inspected by repairman, said no problem.

Default AW: Leica M6 rewind mechanism stiff

Josef,
I use a M6TTL, M2 and M3 for years now. I too notice that rewinding the M6TTL is remarkable stiffer than rewinding the M2/ M3. Never had problems of damaged film.

Regards

Oliver

Josef,

The spindle that is attached to the base plate of your M6 (not sure exactly what it might be called - the one that pushes the film down onto the M6's take-up spool), adds resistance to the whole rewind process.

Make sure that this spindle is not binding and providing more resistance than usual. I have had this happen to me - switched baseplates from an M4 to an M6, the spindles did not match just right, et voilà - rewind got much stiffer.

Best,

Jan

Did you drop the camera on its end. I did once with my M4 and the RW knob bent into the body. The knob had to be replaced.

Same thing happened to me on M6ttl, the knob/crank assembly bent and was catching on the top housing. Malcolm Taylor straightened it whilst checking the camera over and adjusting the rangefinder. I thought the shaft had bent but he says that is very strong, he has never seen one bent.

it did not fell down but it is second hand body so i do not know before. it was send to Don Goldberg but he returned it saying it is ok, but still the rewinding remains very stiff, contrary to my previous body - much older but very easy rewind, also my m3 is so easy to rewind.

Josef,

If Don Golberg says it's OK, than it must be OK. There are not too many better Leica technicians on this side of the Atlantic.......

Best,

Jan
