My 800mm Telyt S http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-collectors-historica/217011-leitz-800mm-f6-3-telyt-s-6.html … will be demonstrated at The Leica Society AGM venue (Bentley Hotel, South Hykeham, Lincoln UK) on Saturday 25 April at 10am when TLS members will have the opportunity to try the lens. A selection of adaptors and 1.4x and 2x APO extenders will also be made available. The hotel grounds provide suitable long distance views.

Since posting the original LF thread I have acquired a very substantial Berlebach wooden tripod and head for use with the lens.

Fingers crossed for some decent weather.

Best wishes

Thank you JC … Recently acquired a decent alt-az fork mount and will probably adapt it for use with the lens. Also plan to use the lens as an astronomical telescope.

Even the GITZO tripod is the heaviest one and it is very strong, the 2 MANFROTTO pieces are important : the gimbal and what makes the complete set stable : the front telescopic arm with its tilt heads.

Apart from adequate lens support to prevent camera shake, adequate air circulation within the optical tube and around the lens group is also important to ensure that their temperatures equal that of the ambient air. This is something that astronomers are more conversant/familiar with especially when astro imaging but is never mentioned in e.g. camera magazines. Even convection currents rising from e.g. warm concrete can affect the image. Some astronomical telescopes' tubes, especially astrographs specifically computed for astro imaging, are fitted with electric fans to enable fast temperature equalisation.

Interesting article about astro telescope OTA cooling http://www.skyandtelescope.com/astronomy-equipment/beating-the-seeing/ … note comment about heated buildings being a disaster area.

Prior to attaching the camera to the lens I will be using a portable electric fan on a separate tripod at the demo to ensure that the internal lens tube temperature is the same as that of the ambient air.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have to advise that the 800mm Telyt demo forming part of the events at The Leica Society 2015 AGM at the Bentley Hotel, South Hykeham, Lincoln, is for TLS members only and their guests - who all buy tickets for the 2 day event.

Best wishes
