Photographica #30 hammer prices

Having lusted after a lens in the latest photographica auction by Rahn, I followed the live bidding last Sunday.

While the final prices seemed mostly in accordance with the estimates, I cannot understand why lot #295, a Leica CL Attrappe, estimated between 190 and 240€ managed to reach ...2200€. This one is extreme, but several other "Attrappes" also exceeded their estimates. Is this a new fad? Other CL, in working order, fetched 300 to 500€.

I know there is no accounting for tastes but that is going quite far:confused:

Hello Octo,

"Attrappe" are display models which appear to be complete but are actually lacking the inside. Whether camera, lens, or whatever. An "attrappe" lens will have a front element.

The market for what is currently desirable in terms of collectability is a market sometimes driven by whim & fashion. This is the situation whether we are talking about cameras, cars, golf clubs or trees.

These are also markets sometimes driven by forces not constrained by cost of production (in either direction) or utility value (ditto).

Best Regards,

Michael

Hi, Octo (ou bonjour, puisque vous habitez Cannes, semble-t-il).

When I looked at your logo, it reminded me a brochure I have in my library, exactly similar to yours (photo hereunder). Mine is unfortunately only a reprint (of excellent quality) and is referenced "Liste : Photo Nr 2275b, August 1929. Is yours an original?

Alas, I wish t'were mine!
