Default Cleaning old Leica chrome lens hood?

I've a 8.5cm Summarex hood which I use with a Canon 85mm f/1.5. I'm getting the lens CLAed by Sherry. I would like to clean up the old hood also.

What's a good way to clean it with out damage to the original markings and matte black liner?

I use a soft brush and dishwashing liquid. Also keep a selection of old tooth brushes on hand to reach into tough to get areas.

Best,

I regularly clean up old metal hoods with soap and water, or 'white spirit' (oil paint thinners/turpentine), or even metal polish as required, all with no ill-effects. (These are usually ok for plastic hoods too). As for matt black inners, I repaint using standard auto-shop spray paint or 'blackboard paint' after masking off with tape. But I find chrome is generally impervious to cleaning - that is, it doesn't usually look any better after a clean than beforehand, apart from shifting the grime .... Alan
