johnpierce Posted November 14, 2014 Share #1 Posted November 14, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) my Uncle uses and recommends a Desiccator Cabinet (he lives in Asia), but others suggest a cheap acrylic storage compartment with foam and silica packets kept out of the sun will suffice. what do you recommend? Advertisement Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Hi johnpierce, Take a look here How do you store your Lenses + Cameras?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
costakarl Posted November 14, 2014 Share #2 Posted November 14, 2014 Bought a Dri-Cabi when working in Hong Kong some 20 years ago and it has never failed to maintain about 45% humidity level. Beats those silica bags.
MarkP Posted November 14, 2014 Share #3 Posted November 14, 2014 Stored in a humidity-controlled cabinet. It's also convenient because all the equipment is laid out and ordered on foam-padded contoured shelves for quick and convenient access. They really aren't very expensive at all. davidmknoble Posted November 14, 2014 Share #4 Posted November 14, 2014 I guess it depends on cost... I use the aluminum descant's that can be recharged in the oven from archival stores. But i keep them in half unzipped Leica leather cases, for air flow, and use them often. Note that sunlight (UV) actually helps kill / prevent fungus. When I use lenses outside in humid weather or on a backpacking trip, I set on a window sill for a few days to be sure thoroughly dried and UV'd... Probably the key is however you store the lens, be sure it is crisp and dry before putting it away...
Guest JMF Posted November 14, 2014 Share #5 Posted November 14, 2014 Same here, storing all lenses in a 45% humidity controlled cabinet with built-in LED lighting.
bocaburger Posted November 17, 2014 Share #6 Posted November 17, 2014 My older stuff I keep in a glass display case. The central A/C is on pretty much all year round here so humidity isn't really a problem. Newer stuff I keep in plastic storage boxes in a closet with slatted doors, and again the A/C being on keeps the humidity at bay, but I also keep a product called Damp-Rid in the box. Those are crystals or flakes that sit in a perforated basket in the top of a plastic tub, absorb moisture and deposit it below in the tub. It needs the water dumped periodically and new flakes added to the basket. I used to use the rechargeable silica cannisters but recharging them in the oven was a PITA and I often forgot to do it. I have never had a fungus issue in two decades of living here.
Bill Clark Posted November 29, 2014 Share #7 Posted November 29, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have one of those old time bookcases that has a framed glass door for each shelf. It has 4 shelves that shows off the old cameras!
