pico Posted August 30, 2014 Share #1 Posted August 30, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Black enameled Leica bodies seem to have been made sporadically. I do not know when, and for which models they were made. Is there a list of only enamel/paint models? I have two, one so savaged I will not mention it and its brother which has been in the box since 1969. Just trying to become oriented. Advertisement Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 Hi pico, Take a look here When were black enamel bodies made?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wildlightphoto Posted August 30, 2014 Share #2 Posted August 30, 2014 Black chrome replaced black enamel in about 1970 IIRC. The Leicaflex, Leicaflex SL and M4 were avaialble in black enamel and I believe that earlier M cameras were also available in black enamel.
luigi bertolotti Posted August 31, 2014 Share #3 Posted August 31, 2014 M3, M2, M4 were all made also in black paint... and the first two are rare, valued, and even faked ... if i remember well the Cameraquest' site has a good list of them, with serial numbers (probably, not 100% sure data)
pico Posted August 31, 2014 Author Share #4 Posted August 31, 2014 Thank you all for the information. I asked because I am trying to determine what I should do with a pristine, never used 1969 black enamel M4 with same-year black 50mm Summicron. I wore a black enamel M4 just plain to dust of the same year by 1978. No loss: I was on staff and subsidized. Today the workhouse is an M4-P that gets the same treatment. In terms of usefulness I am good with M4-P. Becoming oriented, Pico
250swb Posted September 1, 2014 Share #5 Posted September 1, 2014 Although a general serial number list this gives dates and numbers for the black paint versions of M cameras and has notes on the different finishes to put things into context, like when black chrome took over for the M4 https://www.cameraquest.com/mtype.htm Steve

Back when I got my first M4 it was black enamel and as a young man I thought they would be around forever, and I professionally abused it. Now that I am an Olde Pharte with enough M bodies for the rest of my life, the lonely black enamel version has such sentimental value that I'm almost embarrassed. So, that's how it happens! . pico Posted September 2, 2014 Author Share #8 Posted September 2, 2014 A black paint M4 is a very pretty camera, even well worn. I have often thought about getting one myself. Steve I have one. I will mention you in my will. It will say, "Hi, Steve!". All my stuff will be sold at scrap metal prices and the money will go into a fund to support those who make pictures after the global EMP of 2020.
