Extremely rare Leica M Abrahamsson 21mm Elmarit goggles prototype

Recommended Posts

Very tasty item !!! Surely from the first batch... but I wonder why the seller attaches a picture of an article where they speak about a Super Angulon with goggles... :( it just generates doubt and confusion, which is no good when you want to sell something at a high price... : even the details of the story aren't so clear... if I remember well, the Elmarit 21 with goggles is a very rare but "standard" early variant... not in relation with a specific person like Abrahamsson... but don't remember where I read of ... :o ; the duo Muller/Abrahamsson indeed modified standard Elmarits 21 ... years ago I remember well to have seen one for sale (in the 3.2/3-4xx.xxx range)

With real interest one should ask Tom Abrahamson himself about one of his modified 21mm lenses with goggles.

Maybe he builds again a 21mm lens in order to this madness prices.:)

It is described extensively in Johnathan Eastland's Compendium. I find the price, for a third-party conversion, frankly bordering on the ridiculous. But as they say, it only takes one fool...

Obviously this is not a prototype, or a Leitz product, only a third party conversion. In any case intriguing and useful for certain enthusiasts. I remember having seen selling one years ago, from Canada.

cheers.

I am not so sure is a 3rd party conversion.... (seem to remember that even Puts, or Lager, speaks of some "factory goggled" items in the first production runs...) anyway, price is out of logic.

... I forgot that Wiki does quote Puts...

2993701 - 2994700 21mm f/2.8 Elmarit-M (non-RF w/ + w/o goggles)1979

(Found also a funny assesment from Tom Abrahamsson : "My philosophy is that any car costing more than a Summicron 50 is overpriced - TA" :D)

According to J. Eastland's book the problem with converting the 21mm Elmarit this way was that it blocked too much of the viewfinder.

It is a shame that the lens for sale has the outside edges of the viewfinder and rangefinder supplementary lenses covered in what appears to be duct tape...

The small size of the Super-Elmar-M 21mm f/3.4 ASPH current lens might make it a candidate for resurrecting the project. The small lens hood would also substantially reduce the viewfinder blockage issues of the larger lenses. Given that the modification also brings up the 28mm viewfinder framelines, automatic lens coding should also be possible.
