Hi!

I haven't been thinking a lot about it before and I have had my 35mm Summicron lenns for about 10 years now....but this evening I got obsessed about knowing when it was manufactured and I thought that maybe someone in the forum might be able to help me.

The serialnumber is 2329988.

I was checking around a bit on the net without finding anything. However, I did find some lenses with quite the same serialnumber and it said that they were all made in Canada. But on my lens it says "Lens made in Germany" so I guess that's not the case with mine.

Thankful with help!

Best regards

Carl

Is one of the first of the so called "second design" (6 lenses vs. 8 of the "first design") : they started at 2307450 (or 2316001... authors are not concordant... and also about the year, I found 1969 and also 1968... but the "second design" was formally announced in 1969, with the new code 11309). All blacks, for what I know, and most of them are "Canada", but Wetzlar items undoubtly do exist. Summicron 35 had a lot of variants, joy of collectors... how is yours ? There are items in the number range of yours that have a strange protruding lever for aperture control... and others that HAVE NOT the usual E39 filter thread...

I like to have variants of a certain lens, but have 3 Summicrons 35 only... in the years I'll go on (I consider almost finished my Elmar 90 series... 7 items all different in something :) ) Of course... if you'd like to sell...

Thank you for the quick answers! Once again this forum shows how much great knowledge is collected here!

1969 you say, then it is a bit older than what I have expected. I bought in Stockholm at the same time when I bought my M6, about ten years ago, and I can't remember what I paid for it. But I was very young (and poor) at the moment so I guess I bought the cheapest lens they had.

Luigi, my lens is great and delivers amazing pictures. Unfortunately it is my only lens for my M6 so I am not planning to sell it at the moment. But what do you mean with "a strange protruding lever for aperture control"? I'm sorry, I guess that my english are lacking about this one, but here's a picture of my camera and the lens:

Body is 1988 built. Your lens HAS the lever I wrote about ! Can be seen clearly in your picture ! It serves to operate the diaphragm ring...damn, you have a RARE item... really you didn't pay much ? 10 years ago, a Summicron like yours (Wetzlar, with lever) was already a well known collectible... maybe the dealer was not aware of... once only, I too made a bargain of this kind with a lens the dealer had not idea of...

Once again, thank you for the information! The age of my camera I've been asking about before in ths forum without any clear answer, as well as the fact that it only says "M6" and not Leica M6" on the front of the body. All the other Leica M6 I've seen have the "Leica M6" engraving, but as far as I have understand Leica made different version regarding the fact that that they changed the text from "Leitz" to "Leica" in the red dot on the front.

Luigi, thank you for the info! Funny to know that my lens is a bit rare, I didn't know that. And I guess you are right, it also says "Leitz Wetzlar" on front of then lens.

I am sorry but I can't remember how much I paid for it, but if I would guess I would say about 300€. I don't know if that is a good price or not, but as I wrote earlier, the lens is amazing and everytime I take a look at a new developed film I am amazed of the quality! With that I want to say that whether the price was a bargain or not, I am deeply satisfied! I guess the fact that I still, after all those years, haven't invested in another lens is a good proof of that.

Thanks and best regards

I've got the same lens, except Canada built, with the little tab on the aperture ring. Serial # 2317367, so one of the early second series lenses, I guess. Lovely lens which I'm very fond of, particularly with the M8 where it gives me a 50mm field of view. I will admit, though, the tab is too close to the lens shade for easy use.

Luigi, is the Canada version with tab not a collectible? I would assume so, as I bought it inexpensively several years ago.

I think any Summicron with the tab has to be regarded as an interesting item for collectors: simply, Canadians are commoner than Wetzlars... and the collector's market has its usual rules.
