Default Leitz Telyt-S 1:6,3 / 800mm

Have any of you Leica-Forum members ever worked with the Telyt-S 800mm F/6,3 lens?

If affirmative - how was the Telyt-S 800mm to work with? How was the quality of the pictures made with this lens? What kind of photography did you use the lens for? How did the lens compare to tele-photo lenses from Nikon, Canon, etc..? What was the price for the lens when you bought it? Was the weight of the Telyt-S ever a problem to you?

All the best - Svenning, Denmark.

I post reply but DO NOT HAVE IT. Like to speak of because it is one of my dreams.... years ago I saw one on sale for 6K$...if it would have been next to me I think could have not resisted the temptation...luckily, the Atlantic Ocean was between me and this item...otherwise I had risked a good hole in my pockets.

I imagine you know something about it: is three-lenses special glass (diiferent from 400-560 telyts, that are two lenses and at less than f11 show no little spherical abherration), it was in R Mount, Visoflex mount on request, theorically available also in Minolta SLR mount (they were the time of the Leitz Minolta agreeement, see Leica CL, no many people knowsthat the Giant Telyt was part of the agreement...think that no one or so has been deliverd in such configuration). Seems that the vey first item were used in Munchen 72 Olympics; I saw some excellent wildlife picture taken with it (on SL body): superb color rendition, fascinating OOF.
Weighted a lot (7 Kg about), had a sort of "monocular" fitted in the carrying handle for "pre framing" , was delivered disassembled (see the big levers in the pict) into an aluminium case, needed of course a tripod, but better TWO, a second tripod/monoped can be screwed in the front section... Stop so: I repeat, is simply a dream for me....

Had one for about six months a LONG while ago. The results I got were phantastic as far as resolution, sharpness ect. was concerned. I used it with my SL2 and the R7.

But it was a pain to rigg the thing ! You have to use two tripods actually, one near the handle, one additional support at the front of the lens.

It takes some time to get things right. When you are ready, the butterfly is long gone, at least my were. I was in a position to sell it with quite a profit, so I let it go.

In case you are an experienced long lens user - or you are planning to become one - try it out. You won´t be disappointed. But it might take a bit of time until you handle it quickly ...

Not with case, apparently... don't want to investigate further... a good excuse to be not too much tempted...another is the big Ocean, but Tamarkin is a well known dealer...
OHHH, WHAT MAY I DO ?

Luigi:

The title line says: "... with carrying case ..."

Sorry, but it's one less excuse, if you really "need" it!

I saw one for sale in RG Lewis in Holborn a few years back ... and was still available new in 1997.

I have a 560/5.6 which is a very heavy lens to carry and needs 2 tripods for maximum stability ... can imagine that the 800/6.3 is even more difficult to use unless staying in one place/location.

I'll tell you the truth...ALSO I would like to find a Visoflex mount S-Telyt... I do not love SLRs... I have just a R4 (with a single lens: : "Leica-Sigma" zoom 28-70) that would like to discard... this is the real reason for I have passed by the Tamarkin bid; and this is the kind of dream that maybe will never come in reality... how many were built with the Viso mount ? I think a very very small number... they were '70s... Leica M system was in decline...
But for long hours, yesterday, I was in trouble... a pair of clicks in ebay are so easy to do... but finally said to myself : "well, imagine I GET IT : it deserves better than the R4 I do not love so much...say a SL or SL2 or R6... but this means a camera that I have to USE... I would have to take other LENSES... I would be exposed to buying temptations I well know... STOP STOP STOP"
