jaques Posted December 16, 2010 Share #1 Posted December 16, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just came across a large trove of vintage Leitz odds and ends. I am going to post some pictures here in the hopes that the sites learned experts can help me identify them. Let me thank these experts in advance First off the bat are some ABLON units: My question concerns the first of the three pictured. Is it called ABLON or does it have another name? Is it specific to particular camera models? The next two are more common and look the same. However there is a slight difference in the shape and I wonder if these also relate to different cameras? Advertisement Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 Hi jaques, Take a look here the 'whatthehell' archives... ablon and friends. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaques Posted December 16, 2010 Author Share #2 Posted December 16, 2010 (edited) The next item that needs identifying is an unusual base plate. I have no leads on this one- what is the little wheel with arrows on the inside for? Is it just a 'quick release' plate? What camera/s? Welcome, dear visitor! jaques Posted December 16, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted December 16, 2010 The next items are self explanatory LTM extension rings... I just thought they may be of interest to collectors- Leitz New York - is this very common? Welcome, dear visitor! ndjambrose Posted December 16, 2010 Share #4 Posted December 16, 2010 The ABLON is a tool used in trimming the film leader on LTM cameras. Open the hinge, insert the film leader, close hinge, then trim away the exposed fim. The two on the right are classic types often seen but the one on the left is new to me. jaques Posted December 16, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted December 16, 2010 Thanks Neil, I was wondering if the unusual (older?) ablon cuts the leader for an older model camera? I have another unknown item, some type of slide viewer? Welcome, dear visitor! jc_braconi Posted December 16, 2010 Share #10 Posted December 16, 2010 I just came across a large trove of vintage Leitz odds and ends. The ABLON had different designs during their years of production The First and Late models were with squared ends.

The first ablon unit is not used for trimming the film to load the camera, but is used to trim the film leader to fit a vintage Leitz spiral loading developing tank. jaques Posted December 17, 2010 Author Share #14 Posted December 17, 2010 (edited) Thankyou very much JC and Robert... Mr Braconi- your knowledge is encyclopedic... truly impressive- you have named everything. I will look in my trove and see if I can find a new mystery item to test your skills. Regarding the early Ablon- in those days you needed to cut the film leader to load the camera.... and then needed to cut it again, differently, to load the developing tank? Photography used to be so much harder.... digital makes things so easy. Edited December 17, 2010 by jaques
jc_braconi Posted December 17, 2010 Share #15 Posted December 17, 2010 and then needed to cut it again, differently, to load the developing tank? Photography used to be so much harder.... . No as you use the end of the film already cut. and Not so hard and cheap when you use 50 m of film for loading what you need for making picts up to 40 exp. I like challenges in anyway

It is for loading film for large tank as for reporter models
jaques Posted December 17, 2010 Author Share #17 Posted December 17, 2010 (edited) Ok- the next in the 'whatthehell' archives is some kind of MIKAS/OLEYO contraption. However the Mikas bit is by Beck of London. The OLEYO is in very fine condition but it does not have a focusing fresnel. I assume none is needed with this set up. I also assume the plate on the Oleyo is a film holder... Is this an unusual set up? Welcome, dear visitor! jc_braconi Posted December 17, 2010 Share #18 Posted December 17, 2010 The difference between an OLIGO and an OLEYO is the size of the shutter. You can see on the pict what is missing on yours. There are also square and rounded bodies models of OLIGO andOLEYO.

Quite surprising that nobody answered yet about your film templaye on the left. It has never been given a code, and came as film cutting template for use with DEFOO or TAHOO= film processing tanks. Pecole Posted December 17, 2010 Share #20 Posted December 17, 2010 The next item that needs identifying is an unusual base plate. I have no leads on this one- what is the little wheel with arrows on the inside for? Is it just a 'quick release' plate? What camera/s? This is the BLISE baseplate for the BLITZ flashgun (model VII, circa 1941). Lager illustrates all bases variants on pages 248-251 of his "Illustrated History - Volume III - Accessories".
