Default M6 logo only

I have just bought an M6 and notice that it has a large M6 without the word Leica on the front panel (apart from the red spot). Was this just a passing fashion or does it denote a particular variant of the M6?

Mike,

My M6 does have the Leica M6 inscription on the front and it is duly taped over.. It is also engraved as Ernst Leitz Wetzlar on the top plate. This indicates an early production M6, prior to the change in the company ownership.

I am going strictly by memory - all later Solms produced M6's dropped the Leica engraving from the front, keeping only the M6 designation.

All the best,

Jan

The M6 only logo i think that was made as display models, look at some of the first M6 brochures and you will find some M6 only logo.

i own 3 of them, 1 chrome and 2 on black.

I've had 2 of these "Big M6" Leicas (as they are referred to by collectors). Most sources say that when the company structure changed from Leitz to Leica and the factory moved from Wetzlar to Solms it was decided to just use the M6 since the red dot now read Leica. It was thought that Leica over the M6 was redundant. It didn't last long and the Leica reappeared above the M6 after a very short time. See Gandy's website or Laney's books for details. Hope this helps

Thank you. I think this clears it up.
