luigi,
yes, I am italian but I think we should go on in english for our friends from abroad :-)

many thanks for your detailed post. I did not meet before the Rahn shop and I'm going there for a while, later. May I use the 21/3.4 on M3 or M4 with no problem (beside viewfinder, I suppose)?

Thanks again I will take care of your advises and suggestions. I live in Firenze, you?

Flavio

PS BTW very nice place: I found people loving Leitz, Leica, Apple and BMW motorrad. Just like me :-))

Flavio,

Yes, the f:3.4/21mm Super Angulon can be used without restrictions on any M Leica, which does not have a lightmeter. Complications arise only when you use the lens on the M5, M6, M7, MP (new), CL and M8.
  • M5 and CL: Lens cannot be used unless its bayonet mount is modified not to raise the meter arm. This of course will mean that the meter will not work at all.
  • M6, M7, MP (new), M8: Lens can be used, but the rear element will block the lightmeter path, resulting in an incorrect reading. There is a way to cut off a part of the rear element mount, but about a 1 stop adjustment will still be needed for accurate measurement.
All the best,

Jan

about the 21s... another (correct) reply has already arrived. The Viewfinder is a bit costly, anyway easy to find; other 21 finder non Leitz can be found for cheap (there is also a costly Zeiss revolver finder that has 21...).
I live in Brescia (Italy, ah), and... own a R65 LS of eighties (but not an Apple fan, sorry)

Ciao Luigi,
I used a regular (not LS) R65 in 1979, then changed for a R100 (in 1980) that I still use. I drove a coast-to-coast-to-coast through USA during 1983, then across a lot of european countries and Cappadocia.

Thanks for the useful infos. I have to say that I am a Leica R user since 1983 and lately I'm trying to understand my M4. Then I fall in love with the 1955 concept :-)

I'm seeing interesting M3/'55 cameras @ Leicashop, while I'm wondering about the lens between 21 Super Angulon f:3.4 (found no chrome but black) or a lighter wideangle. No 1955 lens found yet and no Leicameter M.

Flavio

Jan,
interesting restriction the ones you're reporting about 21 and M8. In my mind I know that I'll save coins everyday in order to purchase it one day :-)
I like very much shot with wideangles. It's a pity that 35 mm wideangle appear less wide on a digital machine.

Flavio,
sure to go for M3? Legendary tool, really, but the M4, just for the Viewfinder 35-to-135 is a little more versatile (frames are better, too) and deserves the same feeling as M3 : simply a classic; about the wideangles... 21 3,4 I repeat is VERY FINE, and think a photographer with some kind of sentiment must have a 21; Voigt-Cosina lenses are interesting... it's about 2 years I permanently think to have the 15... never decided...there is also a 21, I seem to remember, and (I did not think before) maybe a good 21 viewfinder that can be ordered by itself

Luigi,
agree completely about 21 (especially) SuperAngulon. I failed to buy one for my Leica R4s some years ago and since then I cannot forgive myself. The "problem" is that I should prefer a white chrome and not a black one as I see @ Leicashop, but I wonder: is there any f:3.4 white chrome??

About M3: I am aware about M3-M4 difference, but during 1955 there was no M4 and, of course, I am not able to sell M4 for M3. I am lucky enough that my wife and our daughter do not want sell the great M4 and no Leitz object in our home.

It seems we are a real Leitz "family" :-)

You are right, 21 3,4 (as any Leitz lens, in my op.) is more fine whon chrome (my ome is so, found it 10 or 12 years ago at Foto Camera Milano), wait and someday one will appear somewhere...
I have also wife and daughter (s,,, 3): and they do not want I discharge Leitz gear: the older daughter (12) sometimes has the permission to use..the CL...

Ciao Luigi!
just arrived after the saturday morning country photo trip. I betrayed M4 for R4s and 60 Macro Elmarit with Provia 100 ASA (still prefer say ASA than ISO :-) and Nikon Coolpix S5 that I use with Aperture Software by Apple (its enough to buy a Mac, believe me :-).

Many thanks for eBay info but I have done a "fioretto": never buy on eBay :-)
Some months ago I was dealing a Radio receiver but after a couple of "deeper" questions, the seller vanished and the same did happen for others products he/she had for sale. Mmmh!
I prefer buy in different places (as recently happen for 2 Weston Master meters) though I can understand you can do good business there.

3 daughters, good! The older is 12? Mine is 11. Her name is Marina. Sometime she uses the Leica MIni beside her compact digital Fuji.

Ciao e grazie!

Flavio

Luigi,
it is reported as A condition, so I think it may be almost perfect, though with no case. Is there a way to ask something to Rahl about that item? Do you use to talk with some guy in particular?

Nevre spoken with a people specific, my last acquisition from them was in 2005... I do not have the name that mailed me the acceptance of order... anyway the condition the device I bought (an Elmarit 28 2,8 very 1st type, Wetzlar) resulted to be A- as declared. If you really are looking for the 21 3,4 chrome , go on! Do not forget the McKeown laws:
- "Anytime you pass on on some gear you want, you never shall find it for years"
- "Anytime You buy something you have searched for years, the same device shall be offered to you for less money few days later"...

Pizza with family, I'm going... keep me up to date if You buy

Flavio,

Congratulations - the 3.4/21 is a great lens. I own one in black and even though I have to resort to a hand-held meter to use it on my M7, I will not part with it.

All the best,

Jan

Hi Jan,
thanks. Yes I am a wideangle fan and am looking forward to use it with my M4 and Weston Master V, Ranger n. 9 and even with hand-held Leicameter.

It seems we are living in another world. This morning walking in the country I met some people shooting around. Digital at all, while here we are talking about cameras and lenses where you have to know what you are doing, before shooting. No automatic system at all.

In the afternoon I was out to purchase some more Velvia films for tomorrow morning on the field photo trip and watch fine digital japan brands.
Later I purchased the Super Angulon.

Congratulations from me too, Flavio ! (coming back from pizza): sorry, did you purchase from leicashp-Wien or Rahn - Frankfurt?

The McKeown law I quoted has been tested by myself in two instances, one of which related to Rahn:

- I did searched for 28 2,8 Elmarit Wetzlar for really YEARS (somthing mysterious lens, Lager wrote "all 28 I inspected are from Canada... apparently some Wetzlar lens exists...);as I said in 2005 (november, seems to me) I found one at Rahn: 950 Euro or something...bought immediately. In Feb or march 2006... a 28 2,8 Wetzlar in BOLOGNA (Italy): 750 Euro...

- To the other extreme of measure: I have 400 and 560 Telyts, and thought as a dream about the S-Telyt 800 6,3: 3 or 4 years ago..one on ebay! complete with case ! Never bought on ebay, did not know well the mechanism... myself not registered... and, simply, do you trust in buying something worth 5 or 6 K$ from an unknown source? Money was a lot...I shook my mind imaging to sell something like my Rolleiflex 3,5F and Super Ikonta 6x9, did money computations, exhitated a lot..day passed...and S-Telyt 800 disappeared: never seen another after (neither searched, to be true..., I have fear to be tempted too much...)
good night
