I really like this sort of shot but of course it needs to be much larger (I need a bigger screen)
Imho, if you black out that lone highlight on the right it makes the image stronger.

Thanks Pete, I misse the highlight with the D2 ( not this image) I tried out a new setting for me 400 iso,
White Balance set on B&W, contrast-high, sharpness-standard,
then the other
White Balance set on B&W contrast-high, sharpness-standard, saturation-low and converting the jpeg via channels, produces a nice grain.
here is a sepia version of the latter

Circular Quay?

I like this - I assume you're familiar with Trente Park's work? I saw an exhibition of his in Sydney in Jan 2005.

Is that a figure in the foreground? I'd love to see them a few steps on, still in sillouette but with a luminous outline.

Steve, yes the Quay it is and there would have been about 30 people from one end to the other at 9pm....
I saw a bit of Park's work on the net.
Harsh tones are the norm here as it is one way to combat the overblown highlight issue due to the bright sunlight so we tend to use similiar techniques at night

Now that second image has a real vintage look. I've never used my D2 in B&W mode, I'm ashamed to say, must give it a go. I found that 400 ISO was pretty crap with colour, but of course it's a different kettle of worms in monochrome. I'm still learning
