I am working on a portfolio of Guildford, in Surrey, aiming for an exhibition later this year. The sudden and unexpected snow we had on Sunday morning gave me the opportunity to capture some familiar scenes in a different way.
The black and white shots were taken with my trusty IID, running Kodak 400CN. The first is with the 5cm Elmar, and the second with the 3.5cm. The colour shots are with the LX2. Bill -
A terriffic series. Of the B&W, the second works better for me only because the modern, wire structure on top in the 1st is grating to the older structure, but interestingly, is not bothersome in the color version. |

Thank you all, for your kind - and interesting - comments. I agree about the cage - it's a bugger. I think (although I have not been into the castle for years) that it is a "safety measure" for visitors who climb to the top. What nobody has commented on is the amazing disappearing flagpole... I cloned it out of the b&w photos because on one it disappeared off the edge of the photo - jarring enough to my eye to make me clone it out - a minor bit of editing, IMO. The cage, however, is a prominent and distinctive part of the structure - love it or hate it you can't ignore it! I feel if I cloned out the cage I would end up with a more aesthetically pleasing - and timeless - image, but a far less "truthful" one. What are your thoughts?
Regards, Bill

I would try cloning it out, not hard with that sky and the Keep would look more natural. As with the flag pole most people would probably not notice.
The alternative is to shoot at a more severe angle to lose it naturally but then the expense of hiring a snow machine...........
