Default Burton Church

Been playing around with the "over-expose, under-develop" technique today. Really seems to work. On the neg, there's detail right into the shadows, and throughout the sky too.

M2/35 f2.8 Summaron/1 stop yellow filter/Delta 100 rated at 50/DD-X, developed for one minute less than recommended.

Andy, superb B/W tonal range. I like the composition too. But, some white spots must be removed.

True, it does need spotting. Sorry about that.

Andy -- very nice. The lowered contrast (due both to the lens and the development?) give it an old-fashioned look. Puts one in mind of those pictures of Devon taken by James Ravilious. He also used older Leica lenses and adjusted his development to lower the contrast. I tried it (more exposure less development) on some pictures taken in Paris on a very sunny summer day with Tri-X and it seems to help cut the grain as well as lower the contrast. All the best, John

Very nice result Andy. Could I clarify. The recommended DD-X time for delta 100 at 100 is 12 mins. So am I right in thinking you exposed at 50 and developed for 11 mins?

Actually, it was 10 minutes (my typo), as that was what the recommended time for Neopan 400 is at 800 ASA and they both went in the tank together.

I was always a great believer in the manufacturers knowing what is best for the film and developer, but after having spoken with Robin Ravilious at her husband's exhibition, I thought I'd experiment. These experts knew what they were doing

Nice composition and lovely tonal range Andy.

The technicalities are a bit beyond me at the moment! But interesting none-the-less.

Burton is a lovely village. Good angle here.
Tri-X was my weapon of choice half a lifetime ago; I always found it to be a very "tolerant" film, you could develop it in anything at any temperature and get some sort of result. In this case, I suggest you add a few drops of Clearasil to your fixer.

Thanks for the comments guys. Next time I will experiment with some alternative films. Got some Pan F here that needs using up. That rated at 25 could be interesting. What was interesting was pushing the Neopan 400 to 800 and pulling the Delta to 50, souped in the same tank, with both giving very acceptable results (subject to the spots!)

One day, I'll have to get my darkroom built.

Very nice tonal range Andy.

I've got some Efke ISO 25 in the freezer. If you want to try some super slow film I could pop a couple of rolls in the post.

Andy -

You've certainly gotten the technique to work. Delightful sharpness, tonal range and contrast.
