Nice one Andy, I noticed there was a piece on the local news last night saying that the authorities are going to be more strict applying the exclusion zone around the ship. Having seen the truck deck on the same broadcast I can understand why. There are some very large lorries waiting to drop.

Apparently the beach is now "closed", whatever that means. I thought that it was enshrined in English law that a citizen had the unalienable right (since the Magna Carta) to walk anywhere between the high and low water marks, even if the land above the high tide line is private.
![]() Lovely shot, although I think it looks even better without that car on the left.

They have cordoned off an area about 100 yards round the ship. This is for safety reasons - no one wants a 40 foot artic landing on their head.
This isn't a "rights" issue.

Thanks Brian. I hung around for an hour to get this. The sunset wasn't very good yesterday, and it just all went blue and dull just after this.

Terrific shot Andy, and very helpful to me!
Now I know where my small fishing boat has gone: I must have done a bad clinch to the float last night !Today I found the unfastened rope, indeed... Best Maurizio |

A lovely shot, Andy, that brings to mind the work of Rene Magritte. I think the figures in frame help the shot by their incidentalness (if there's such a word!) and by the way that they appear completely oblivious to the focal point.
Pete.

Andy, a friend sent me a copy of this ship used by Wal Mart for trans-pacific goods. You should be glad one of these don't end up your shores!
Details: Get a load of this ship! 15,000 containers and a 207' beam! And look at the crew-size for a ship longer than a US aircraft carrier which has a complement of 5,000 men and officers. Think it's big enough? Notice that 207' beam means it was NOT designed for the Panama or Suez Canal. It is strictly transpacific. Check out the cruise speed: 31 knots means the goods arrive 4 days before the typical container ship (18-20 knots) on a China-to-California run. So this behemoth is hugely competitive carrying perishable goods. This ship was built in three, or perhaps as many as five sections. The sections floated together and then were welded. The ship is named Emma Maersk. The command bridge is higher than a 10-story building (from the deck) and has 11 crane rigs that can operate simultaneously. Additional info: Country of origin - Denmark; Length - 1,302 ft; Width - 207 ft; Net cargo - 123,200 tons; Engine - 14 in-line cylinders diesel engine (110,000 BHP); Cruise Speed - 31 knots; Cargo capacity - 15,000 TEU (1 TEU = 20 ft3 container); Crew - 13 people; First Trip - Sept. 08, 2006; Construction cost - US $145,000,000+; Silicone painting applied to the ship bottom reduces water resistance and saves 317,000 gallons of diesel per year. |

I think that is Svenning waving from the Maersk.
![]() The item in the foreground of Andy's shot is the remains of another ship, wrecked there in 18xx, according to the BBC this evening. Two for the price of one, excellent! ![]()
