Jaap -

I think one of the reasons why this photo succeeds so well is the angle in which you caught how the very regimented fish are set out.

Yes I think so too; my upload to Photobucket was a bit large, so that site compressed it, I think that is the cause. I'll upload it again.

To me, it has a nice three dimensional quality. Have you printed it, yet?

Great, great capture. Not seen anything like that before, almost like a fish version of a 'pick n mix' sweet counter.

Doesn't look 'plastic' on my screen.

Nice capture - doesn't seem plastic to me - but the two standing figures on the right almost look as though they had been superimposed!

Regimented fish layout = marketing!

Thanks, guys. Yes, the superimposed effect is in the DNG as well, I don't know why, it must be the light. However, I agree with Stnami, The original certainly is more "film-like". No matter, the print counts.
Malawi is a very poor country with an immense lake (8% of the world's sweet water) but the lake is being fished out. That means they are down to small fish as their major protein source (apart from chickens and goats) so there is a strong incentive to display them this way. They are a very artistic people, so they lay everything out very nicely in their stalls. The customers will specify the number of heaps they want, because there are no scales to weigh them. Each heap will cost about 30 $-cents. For tourists and ex-pats five times that amount

Not as noticeable in B&W,,,,,,,,,,,, as with most images if they are made to be printed they are not so good on the net and so on
There are some images that I have in 5-6 variations, not just size and colour space but tones, hues etc depending on what they are to be used for, eg for some slide shows I reduce the contrast depending on its place in the sequence
