Chris,
Comments- where you live: lucky man! Photo: try going into "Enhance", "Adjust Lighting", "Shadows and Highlights" and sending the "Lighten Shadows" slider fully to the left, then move the "Darken Highlights" slider to the right. Then make a copy and do the do the same in Image, Mode, Grayscale. ![]() Keep shooting! ![]()

Good to see you posting again, Chris.
Pete's right about trying to boost the foreground, but do it gently! ![]() Do you have a "Curves" function in your software? Maybe worth having a play with that too.

Thanks chap's for the good advice, sorry I have not been posting lately, I got very disheartened with the forum of late, there are maybe 4 of you that continually post good photo's after good photo's and are kind enough to offer help and advice to others, and thats great, but when so called self proclaimed experts heap praise on an obviously poor photo and shoot anyone one down in flames when they contradict them, then it's not the forum for me, I will stuggle and be happy on my own, however I do love the work of at least 4 of you, and look at it everyday in awe, and can only aspire to reach your levels of expertise, and I can only achieve this with your help, so I have decided to give this forum another chance, but this time I wont take any cr@p.
One for Pete ![]() Chris

Hey Chris, thanks for that shot; it needs some work with the contrast and will produce a winner. I'm barely on page 2 of PS Elements 4 so hardly in a position to advise, especially in the exalted company round here.
![]() I would not bother about forum politics; in any community this large there are bound to be factions, vested interests, self-promoters and folks who just think they are smarter than the rest. Aside from this there are the vast majority of very nice people, often silent. I've made some good friends worldwide in the few years that I've been subscribed, I learned a lot, laughed a lot and obviously offended some folks along the way. C'est la vie. ![]() Please keep posting shots from the wonderful scenery that you are fortunate to live in.

Chris -
I love the view and envy your location. I hope you don't mind me tweaking the image a bit and re-posting. I think the image content is great. By the way what are the circular discs / rings in the water?

Feel free to tweak and adjust as you see fit, however i would appreciate knowing what you have done to improve and enhance my basic shot. The rings in the loch are a commercial salmon fish farm, one of many in the area. Pete, your a good bloke, advice taken, many thanks, ps can I borrow that book after you have finished with it, I have no idea how ps elements 4 works, and just play with it. Chris

Chris,
It is a good shot and well worth experimenting with possible adjustments. As you can see, and as Sharookh has demonstrated, it can be made to be very good in B&W. Now try doing the equivalent in colour, and let us see the result. I can't give any specific PS advice as I don't use it - never have, but the general thrust of Pete and Andy's comments will get you going in the right direction. Pete is also quite right about the forum politics. One has to learn to ignore/smile politely/shrug/say to oneself "what a load of ****". And he's right - the overwhelming majority are a great bunch - certainly the ones I have had the privilege to meet, but far too many are too silent. I am trying to work out exactly where you live - I feel that the view is familiar - but I can't quite place it. But then it has been many many years since I left Glasgow and the West of Scotland. Keep posting! |

Chris -
Nothing much really - adjusted the levels slightly by bringing in the sliders to the limits of the histogram, followed by a very slight adjustment in curves (a very very shallow "S" curve). Finished off with an increase in contrast to the extent of approx 7-10%. Voila!! That's it really. Your image had all the detail - you just needed to pull it out.
