Northwest Wanderer Posted May 6, 2013 Share #5 Posted May 6, 2013 Fine image. I can't imagine the amount of work involved in laying the bricks in that walkway.
Michael Hiles Posted May 7, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted May 7, 2013 (edited) Thanks to you all - much appreciated. Much in China makes one wonder about the work involved. One aspect is relatively cheap labour. I saw a group of three men moving earth by hand in baskets in fairly large quantities - a job that here would require a small back hoe, and no one here would consider doing by hand. It also makes one consider what we mean by work. Most or very many of us work by going into an office or some place of business (factory, job site) and adding value by some form of intellectual effort in the broadest sense. Very few of us work - or would consider working - at a job that required intimate contact with a shovel - but many people in China still do, and for (apparently) very low wages. The differences between here and there are, I think, important and not in our favour. Edited May 7, 2013 by Michael Hiles
