thompsonkirk Posted March 2, 2012 Share #1 Posted March 2, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) On a hike in Death Valley, seven of us managed to get lost in Golden Canyon by ascending a gully that we mistook for a trail. When we came out at the top, we saw this view of Zabriskie Point. Kirk M4 50 Elmar 2.8
Advertisement Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Hi thompsonkirk, Take a look here Death Valley 1. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
tmldds Posted March 2, 2012 Share #2 Posted March 2, 2012 Very nice and so surreal. The hiker adds to the photo. I have been wanting to make a trip there to attend a workshop with John Paul Caponigro. Tri:)
pauledell Posted March 2, 2012 Share #3 Posted March 2, 2012 Kirk, An excellent shot with the composition, the dry colors and the hiker that adds to the scene. This is a lovely place to photograph as long as it's not in the summer. We drove through it one August and I only got a couple of hurried shots. It was over 120 * F and the only living thing we seen were Marine fighters flying over us so low that I almost grabbed its wing. Never again. I'd like to go there in the spring but its to far to travel. Paul
thapamd Posted March 2, 2012 Share #4 Posted March 2, 2012 An excellent perspective, Kirk. I've been to Death Valley several times, and it's one of my absolute favorite places to photograph. I especially love Eureka Dunes. It's a bit out of the way vs Stove Pipe Wells dunes, but well worth it, as fewer people visit it, so less foot prints! thompsonkirk Posted March 2, 2012 Author Share #5 Posted March 2, 2012 Thank you and I'll try there next time! I was with hikers who picked the trails for hiking more than photography, so I didn't have the photo-ops that most people see. Kirk
likalar Posted March 2, 2012 Share #6 Posted March 2, 2012 Be wary of hikers! Nice shots, Kirk. That's a great view of Zabriskie Pt; I hadn't seen that before. Larry
thompsonkirk Posted March 2, 2012 Author Share #7 Posted March 2, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, Larry – That's the view if you start at Golden Canyon & go up the Gower Loop – being careful not to turn off until you see a trail marker. The gully we mistakenly entered was the sort where you climb farther only because it's too scary to look down. This is seen from the point where we came out at the maintained Gower Loop trail. leicamann Posted March 3, 2012 Share #10 Posted March 3, 2012 Kirk - It's so good to see you posting again - I hope you're well. Lovely shot. Ditto .. second that.. yup the placement of the hiker gives us a sense of the scale of the place, its seems that by what your saying is that its easy to get lost there? Thanks for sharing Cheers, JRM
thompsonkirk Posted March 4, 2012 Author Share #11 Posted March 4, 2012 Only if you're as stupid as my friends & I! The trail was clearly marked, just around the next bend. But we mistook an eroded gully for the trail & turned off too soon. Kirk

Bob Jackson Posted March 12, 2012 Share #20 Posted March 12, 2012 Excellent photo Kirk, a difficult to place to shoot, very well done. You're very lucky, the wrong turn there is usually the last. Filmed a TV spot at Zabriskie Point, unbelievably hot; would never do it again.
