Michael Hiles Posted February 10, 2012 Share #1 Posted February 10, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) This is the cloisters of Moissac Abbey, in the south of France. The abbey was founded in the 7th century, but these cloisters date from the 15th. In the 19th century the industrial revolution ran a railroad track through the abbey grounds, and the line is just behind the wall in this picture.

Michael Hiles Posted February 10, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted February 10, 2012 Many thanks to you both. The camera was my (beloved) M2 and my (equally beloved) Summicron 50mm of equal vintage. The film was Ilford XP2. I rotated the picture very slightly - it was absolutely necessary to be vertical here. I also tinkered with the contrast and brightness slightly in Silver Efex Pro to get the best "print". I also used the weak Selenium toning option that makes things a little colder, which I like. Michael Hiles Posted February 12, 2012 Author Share #8 Posted February 12, 2012 Lovely, classic rendition does justice to the architecture. Excellent, Michael. Thank you Ken. This gothic architecture is so lovely. Its formality implies to me photographing it in the same manner. Verticals should be straight, the geometry should show through, strong and simple composition works well. Soft light also works well - direct sunlight and sharp shadows don't help. This approach, in my view, also helps to set these places in their ancient context - far away, rather mysterious, and approachable only with care and an openness to the natural silence.
