Michael Hiles Posted February 1, 2012 Share #1 Posted February 1, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) This is part of a walking trail between Amalfi and Ravello, a little south of Naples. The trail today seems to be most used by tourists, but occasionally (twice in our time there) local donkeys, cows etc. are guided between farms. Just to the side of this trail were ancient and ruined factories that in a far bygone era were the first paper factories in Europe. It always amazes me how these trails were made. There are many sections that were made at evidently great effort, and a very long time ago. I have the same feelings about dry stone walls in (relatively) the middle of nowhere. Same thing for extensive and sophisticated terrassing throughout Europe. Huge amounts of work, often far from materials etc.
