Thanks David..looks like this image is ALSO a bit beyond people ..yet another reason to cease and desist posting.
Locally I received"honorable recognition" on this image and sold many...... if you used the forum as a tool to evaluate your work and sales..you'd long be out of a job.

Very simple....I am Joe critic..the image doesn't fit the expectation...so instead of offering any input or feedback..I pan it..i.e. I look at the photo..but I DELIBERATELY DO NOT POST ANY COMMENT..that is in fact a form of sensorship...by ommision= politics= forget it= waste of time= not worth the effort= withdraw= auf wiedersehen= good-bye.

I do not share your opinion that this is beyond people.
A few weeks ago I was invited to an exhibition of a German photographer. This guy (Andreas Weidner) spends an awful lot of time in the lab to create baryt prints which are stunning. So rich in tonal range and contrast - it's heaven on earth...

I am not an expert at all in scanning photos (I am lazy so I use the DMR) but I can imagine that it is damnend difficult to get the richness of the original over to an electronic copy.

In addition I am not sure how many people are really watching photos here on a calibrated and profiled monitor; adding another bucket of loss.

Probably good to lack quality here because otherwise I would spend too much time in looking here...

I like your photo and try to imagine how it looks perfectly worked out and I believe I have a vision how it looks in reality. Unfortunately the best monitor in the world can't bring that across...

Exactly..you know and understand this..people who have not worked with B&W prints ..don't know that ..and that is in essence..the problem. Like you I have been to many exhibits..that if shown..even on the best monitor ..could never give you the shear physical sense of the photograph..so electronic media..unlike what some people believe..is a poor medium to evaluate an image.

The best this is or ones webpage is simple a small sample of what "really is"

John, you posted this shot only about 12 hours ago, and within 10 hours of posting, you complain about it being "panned". I really don't see this at all.

As far as this image is concerned, as it is shown here, I don't think that this is one of your best. If I saw the original print, I may well change my point of view, but all I have to go on is what is shown here.

I have not yet had a chance to see the image on my calibrated Mac monitor, so would reserve any technical judgement until I have, however, at present, I can see no "heat" in this at all. (Is there some steam there, maybe, at the top left?)

AlI can see at the moment, is some water over a rock, to put it basically. Sorry.

IMHO you have done much better work than this, but you need to give the forum time to respond, if response it what you seek, before complaining about panning.

I post shots that get no response at all. It's not something I lose sleep over, I just move on to the next one. That's life.

I think you're making a basic error in judgment here. Just because x number of people see this thread and your picture but don't comment does not mean they are censoring themselves or don't care. First, withholding comment isn't the same as censorship; second, you are assuming that each visit is done by a seperate person; third, you are assuming that everybody who visits a thread should have something to say about that thread; fourth, I am not sure that it is fair to assume that just because someone posts an image that it HAS to get feedback. It should, and it is nice to get feedback, but it's not determined. There are just too many variables to consider. Often, a great photo is missed. So much is posted by so many people at different times. In any case, I don't know why this forum would be any different from the last one in terms of visit/response ratio. I know that sometimes I look at a photo posting a few times before commenting on it. In my case, I also sometimes feel inadequate to the task of commenting on certian photographs, and thus withold my judgment until I can think of the appropriate words to use.

But to get to this photograph, I'm not sure it does much for me. It probably does look better in print than on a computer screen. I'm noticing the interesting abstract patterns that you have going on here, two darker corners, creating a triangle of light, with more pronounced rock/water patterns on the bottom half of the print which slowly fade out. This is a photograph that is significanly beyond my skill in abstract photography, and in this regard, I'm trying to learn from it. Unfortunately, there is a qualitative aspect to this photograph that is lacking. I think it appears a bit static to me. Anyway, that's what I think... and do keep posting.

John, you seem to be saying that everything you post should meet with widespread aclaim minutes after it's posted. I'm sorry, but this isn't going to happen. Not because the images are bad - in fact they're very good - but because not everyone can comment to all the images they see.

I've posted images myself that I thought would attract comment and they haven't, I've posted others that I thought could be better and they have. The only thing to do in those circumstances is to learn to live with it.

I know you raised this on at least one occasion in the old forum, so it's obviously something that's annoying you, I can only suggest you learn to accept that just because a photograph isn't commented upon within a few hours of posting it doesn't mean that it has no value.

From one who says very little.I am sorry that John feels his pictures are not getting the response he feels they deserve.I can say that I look at many of the pictures posted here including his,on the whole I enjoy them all. They all inspire me to try harder,I have been trying to take good pictures for 30 years or so and yet would still not consider myself qualified to comment on other peoples photographs.I am not sure that a comment "like or don't like" is what is required. But surely sometimes that's what it boils down to. So surely it's best to keep quiete.By staying quiete in the background doesn't mean that your picture is being ignored.
