Dear forum members
When Kodak announced to discontinue the production of Kodachrome slide films after 74 years, the idea came up to have a competition based on this film. If you are a seasoned user of this film, this might be the occasion to say goodbye. If you never used Kodachrome before, this might be the occasion to try it out. The theme for this challenge is ‘Red and yellow’ for the trademark colours of Kodachrome. Many thanks to Bill Palmer, author of the forum challenges, for borrowing the 'Challenge' trademark as well as the proven rules from the other challenges and software support for the evaluation. Special thanks also to Andreas Jürgensen for setting the forum up for this competition as well as winning support, as will be announced separately. Please find the rules for this competition below. If you would like to join in, please have your Leica and roll of Kodachrome ready, since the first photo can be taken on Friday, 31st July 2009 at noon (12:00) your local time. The exposed roll must be in the postbox (or the envelope) for sending to the lab by Sunday, 2nd August 2009 at 8:15pm (20:15) Have fun with the Kodachrome-Challenge. |

Enjoy the contest but don't be thinking you have to say goodbye to the film with well over a year left to go for product support, that is just silly. There will be plenty of Kodachrome around to shoot even in the last 6 months as speculators and overzealous hoarders will be wanting to get rid of stock of the film before it is too late to get it developed and it becomes worthless.

Not necessarily - I have the feeling Kodachrome is pretty good in showing clouds.
The count is 129 downloads of the rules now. If most of them become entries, it might take some time to evaluate the votes ![]() Stefan |

USA west coast just started - unless there is a participant even more in the western direction, everyone should have his film in the camera now.
Looking forward to your pictures ![]() Stefan |

I bet the weather's better on the West Coast of the US than the West Coast of England. Cold, dark and piddling down here...

Tokyo finished eight, Taipei and South East Asia seven, and Middle Europe finished one hour ago, UK finished just now. US east coast has still five, west cost eight hours left.
I hope all participants in Asia and Europe enjoyed the first part of the competition. Good shooting for the remaining time in the US. Stefan |

Dreadful weather here at the weekend, luckily a little sun on Sunday to allow a couple of rolls to get taken

I'm sorry to hear about the competitive disadvantage in the UK.
Nevertheless, I hope everyone had fun and a high yield in excellent pictures. Looking forward to see your photos in eight weeks time One request - could you please post a very short marker in this thread http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-...tml#post984085 to give a feeling for the overall number of participants? Mid Atlantic coast of USA was mixed for the shooting weekend. Saturday was for the most part fine, Sunday was stormy but I was able to do some shooting in the afternnon with breaks between the storms. It is all off to the processor late Sunday afternoon andI am anxious to see what everyone was able to get from their patch of weather. This was a great idea, particularly starting at different times around the world. I was thinking about what must have be going on in Europe or later in the Far East as the days progressed.

Probably the only constructive criticism I'd add would be that the actual allowed shooting time was very short, when compared to the 8 weeks allowed for processing.
This might mean that the take up of the competition could be reduced because of factors like weather and work schedules. I'd suggest that maybe one week, even two weekends, might have allowed a bigger take up and could well have still been accommodated into the 8 week processing time, (or at worst might have delayed it by a week ).Nevertheless it's an interesting and quite exciting competition and great fun (even if I did get soaked on Saturday evening in London !! )

Thank you for your input, Robert. I never took part in the Barnack Challenge (my oldest camera is a M3 from 1954), which runs for seven to fourteen days. Maybe the participants can share their experience with these time frames? I guess the trick is to balance a common frame on the one hand to giving enough shooting opportunities on the other hand.
Anyhow, I'm planning something like a 'project closure' at the end of the competition to collect our experiences and findings for future competitions. Stefan |
