Still heading for the East End? I was living in Bethnal Green as a student 40 years ago, long before it became trendy. Now my son lives there in a trendified tenement block!

No, Brian, not if you mean Keeling House, built in the 50s and recently renovated. He lives in a much older block at the end of Museum Street, which looks much like it did in Victorian (?) times, but has been considerably smartened up inside. It no longer has communal toilets on the staircases, for goodness sake - how trendy can you get?!

I think Brian volunteered the idea of an East End event because he knows of my passion for photographing the area and anticipated I'd contribute my experience towards making it interesting for members.

I don't know if this would appeal. We could meet at Whitechapel tube at 11:00AM and walk through and around Whitechapel towards and ending up at Liverpool Street by 1PM. I'd be happy to act as guide for this adventure.

People who only want to attend the social side of the event could meet us in somewhere like St Georges Tavern or the other large pub attached to Liverpool Street station (I forget its name) at 1PM and we could have the social side of our usual meet ups.

OK, that's the first plan - be honest, if that doesn't appeal I have another idea.

BTW the pub at Liverpool Street station is the Hamilton Hall (a JD Wetherspoon's) if that's the one you were thinking of, Louis. Been in there a few times and it's quite pleasant when it's not crammed.

Pete, that's the one. It has a convenient mezzanine which is often overlooked and makes a nice place to convene for something to drink and eat. The standard even impresses Vince Cable.

And if it turns out to be overwhelmed there are a couple of other places in the vicinity which might be better.

I had toyed with suggesting a curry in Brick Lane but I've become concerned about the standard and a lot of my students have warned me off it!

As it happens I haven't had a ruby in Brick Lane for a couple of years so I'm clueless - is there anything in particular that's gone downhill? (I'm always up for a ruby though! )

I'll try to attend. The Shampan (spelling?) in Brick Lane was great last time I was there, I also know a nice curry restaurant behind Lpool St.

Word of warning - two colleagues have recently had bags stolen whilst drinking in the pubs nr Lpool St (one was the St George), even though the bags were under the tables and supposedly safe. If you take your camera bags hold onto them at ALL TIMES!!

Andy, absolutely.

My route would be as follows:

- Leave Whitechapel Station go north to Brady Street (past Ideas Store)
- Up Brady Street to Durward Street and past Annie Chapman ripper site
- Cross by the pedestrian bridge on Brady Street and over to Royal London Hospital
- Down by side of hospital to look at well preserved old London Medical School and unusual mix of 1880s, 1930s and 1950s public dwellings
- Back up to Whitechapel Road and up Vallance Road to junction with Hanbury Street
- Up Hanbury Street past Brady Centre and Montefiore Centre
- Continue on Hanbury Street to Flower and Dean Walk walk to 4% Dwelling Arch
- Past Toynbee Hall
- To junction with Brick Lane
- Up Brick Lane to Brewery area
- Back down Brick Lane to Princelet Street
- Investigate Hugenot buildings in and around Princelet Street and Fournier Street
- Over to St Georges

Then if we have time

- Down past last Ripper site (now a car park)
- Brune Street
- Wentworth Street
- Middlesex Street
- over to Bishopsgate and Liverpool Street station for refreshment

I think I might be ambitious trying to do this in 2 hours (11AM to 1PM)

Alternatively, we could meet at Liverpool Street and just do Fournier St, Princelet St, Hanbury St (west of Brick Lane), Brick Lane from top to bottom, back via Brune, Wentworth and Middlesex street to Liverpool St Station.

That would be more leisurely and give people plenty of time to photograph.

Mind you, I could just post all my pictures from this route, you could enjoy them vicariously and we could all agree to meet at Liverpool Street for a beer, lunch and a chat :-)
