Ps. Even though Andy couldn't make it, it was nice of him to send his own personal transport to pick us up....

Thanks to "007" for initiating this trip and provoding the Indian weather for us and to Chris for his knowledgeable duties as tour guide. We were indeed very fortunate to have two locals to show us around the beautiful city of Oxford. It was great to see Pete and Jeff again and many thanks to Rob for allowing me to try his DMR battery which eliminated the possibility of a faulty digital back for me!

Blimey, Robert was quick off the mark, and Dave not far behind. It was a most enjoyable occasion and a welcome chance to meet forum members. We probably nattered on for too long at the Turf Tavern and showed too little discipline in the face of temptation (some interesting beers on offer yesterday), but we still had time to sample one of the more interesting colleges (New College, where the attached photo was taken) and to wander through some of the older parts of town before taking in the Ansel Adams exhibition - a must for any forum member who can make it. We dispersed at about 6.30, some back to the pub, others to begin their journey home.
We met an unsuspecting Leica user at the Turf (hello, Steve, if you're lurking) and hope to have browbeaten him into joining the forum. Thanks to Swagato whose idea it was, and to Bob, Dave, Jeff, Peter and Robert. All the best, Chris |

Andy Barton asked: 'Any chance of some names, Robert?'
Andy, in my photograph above taken in the cloisters at New College, those shown are (from left to right) Pete Farnsworth, Robert Parker, Dave Simmonds and Jeff Darken. All the best, Chris |

Just to say that I had a thoroughly enjoyable time and was very pleased to meet everyone who came, take photos, discuss photography, Leica, lenses, dealers etc. And thanks to Chris whose knowledge of Oxford added so much to the day.

Jeff, your b&w photograph looked seriously weird (a vertical lawn?!) until I realized that it needs to be rotated anti-clockwise! Where did you take this?
It was even hotter in Oxford today (I had to work, grrrr), so we chose well in selecting yesterday for the meeting. All the best, Chris One more shot: a normally damp corner basking in some unaccustomed sunshine. |

What an enjoyable day. This was my first visit to Oxford and I certainly plan to make the journey again. Much of the enjoyment was hearing the anecdotes and history of the area from our guide Chris - thank you.
I would have liked to stay longer but by the end of the day my legs had had enough and my intuition to catch the Cambridge bus when I did was well founded. Like the journey inwards the bus was again full and passengers were being refused. Here are some images presented in a slightly unusual rendering all taken with the 28-35-50 Tri Elmar.Bob. |

When we were in the Tavern talking one topic was backing up the registry in Windows systems. A problem with the inbuilt Windows restore program is that it doesn't backup and restore all the security hives (SAM). These can contain program licensing information and days to program expiry, so for obvious reasons developers and Microsoft don't want you to be able to modify these areas. However if they become corrupted you can be in real trouble.
For some years I've used a program ERUNT - The Emergency Recovery Utility NT Registry Backup and Restore for Windows NT/2000/2003/XP. This backs up and allows you to restore the complete registry to a previous date. The latest FAQ says the program will work with VISTA. Before installing any new program I always make an ERUNT backup so that if the program leaves registry entries behind after an uninstall or fails to uninstall the system can always be restored to a pre-install state. ERUNT and NTREGOPT Using ERUNT for backing up the registry Bob. |
