baci Posted April 4, 2014 Share #1 Posted April 4, 2014 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) We're on! Will include One Challenge to be undertaken during the afternoon. I suggest we catch up for an hour and then depart for the One Challenge from 3.00-5.00pm. Happy to take counsel on this! See you at Young and Jacksons (downstairs bar)(edit: Now meet @ Il Solito Posto - see later post) on May 3. I'll be easy to fine - I'll have my M9-P on the table. erl Posted April 10, 2014 Share #4 Posted April 10, 2014 It's noted in my diary. Are we subscribing to 'rules' for a competition, or just having fun?
baci Posted April 10, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted April 10, 2014 Great to hear! Rules, let's have the rules to keep things interesting. Should be good fun!
MarkP Posted April 11, 2014 Share #6 Posted April 11, 2014 Maybe I can make this one. I may be able to come down for a long weekend with my wife (and she will definitely not want to join in but would indulge in retail therapy whilst im doing my photography thing). She wouldn't care when I finish, just so we can plan our time. So if it's a 2:00pm start what time would you expect we're all finished up (ie dinner after or not)? ps - what are the rules?
baci Posted April 11, 2014 Author Share #7 Posted April 11, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) It would be great to see you! I figured we'd beer from 2.00pm to 3.00pm then undertake the Leica Challenge for the two hours from 3.00pm to 5.00pm. After that probably a quick catch up before home. So, wasn't expecting out to turn into dinner, and to be honest with my family commitments I couldn't stay too long after the shootin' but an early dinner might end up happening anyway. Rules are a bit like this: The Leica One Challenge is a competition in which Leica Forum members meet in a different European city every year. Each participant has only one camera, one lens, one film (or 36 digital images) and two hours time to take pictures for his contribution. (http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-news/2013/12/leica-one-challenge-7-wetzlar-the-winner/) Hope to see you there!
MarkP Posted April 11, 2014 Share #8 Posted April 11, 2014 That timing suits me perfectly
MarkP Posted April 21, 2014 Share #9 Posted April 21, 2014 Are we still on for this? Could we perhaps meet in a cafe/restaraunt rather than a pub? I''d really prefer somewhere quiet to talk, a good coffee and perhaps a snack - just that I hate pubs. ie Il Solito Post in George Pde off Collins St. they are licensed so people could still get a drink. baci Posted April 21, 2014 Author Share #10 Posted April 21, 2014 Hi Mark Absolutely still on and I think the suggestion of Il Solito Posto is a good one. Looks like there will be just four of us (all others welcome!) so 2.00pm Saturday week it is. In unrelated news am about to pull the trigger on an Epson 3880 printer. Thinking I'll go through Image Science as they'll include a couple of free profiles. If anyone has any advice to the contrary then I'd sure be pleased to hear it! Cheers Michael
erl Posted April 21, 2014 Share #11 Posted April 21, 2014 The Epson 3880 is indeed a fine printer. I nearly bought one last week but instead had my old 3800 refurbed for a lot less money. The only difference between the two is that the 3880 has Vivid Magenta and Vivid Light Magenta. The 3800 Magentas are not vivid. I print totally successfully against a calibrated screen without special profiles. As far as I am aware profiles are available free quite widely. Talk to Francis at Borg's Imaging in Port Melbourne (Ph. 9646 2399). For comparison, their price is $1875. Their ink carts are a bit cheaper also @ $71.50. Service is good old fashioned. So far I will be able to make the Challenge meet up.
baci Posted April 21, 2014 Author Share #12 Posted April 21, 2014 Great advice John - thanks. It hacks me off how much we pay for this gear here. In the US this has been sub $1,000 - even lower with factory rebate. I sent Epson an email last year basically asking them why the prices here were so high (the dollar was over parity at the time) and their response was basically, "Because we can". I understand it to be a great printer but it's hard to feel good about a purchase where the price does not appear to be subject to competition between retailers and is unnecessarily high to begin with. Rant over. Looking forward dot meeting you on the 3rd! I've adjusted the title of the thread to reflect the change in venue. Cheers Micheal
erl Posted April 22, 2014 Share #13 Posted April 22, 2014 Agree with your rant. I just changed the main title at the beginning to reflect the update.
Lax Jought Posted April 22, 2014 Share #14 Posted April 22, 2014 I'd like to come to this, so I'll tentatively say yes. That weekend might be a little tight, that's all.
erl Posted April 22, 2014 Share #15 Posted April 22, 2014 I'd like to come to this, so I'll tentatively say yes. That weekend might be a little tight, that's all. By the end of the day we may all be a little tight! Hope you can make it. Last minute arrivals are OK.
Lax Jought Posted April 22, 2014 Share #16 Posted April 22, 2014 Also, my M8.2's sensor is very slowly giving up the ghost, much to my dismay. Did I meet some of you at Thorsten's breakfast a couple of weeks ago?
erl Posted April 22, 2014 Share #17 Posted April 22, 2014 Lax, I can lend you a an M8 if you wish. I have two spare. Let me know if you wish it. Unfortunately, I missed Thorsten's breakfast meet.
Lax Jought Posted April 22, 2014 Share #18 Posted April 22, 2014 Thanks for the offer Erl but it should be ok. I've been very grudgingly shooting with the Sony A7 as an alternative. Very grudgingly.
Lax Jought Posted April 22, 2014 Share #19 Posted April 22, 2014 I've been reluctant to send my M8.2 to Solms in case I can't afford the repair bill. So it'll have to wait for now.
