masjah Posted November 9, 2012 Share #1 Posted November 9, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been thinking about the possibility of a second Seaside Challenge, in Whitby, North Yorkshire. I could organise the usual lunchtime meeting-up and Steve Unsworth has very kindly offered to collect and mount the images for voting I'm thinking of a weekend between Easter and Whit. That way, the seasonal hotels would have opened, but would not be too full of holidaymakers (for people who live at some distance and wnated to stay over). I don't know what the demand from Forum members might be, or how many would want to travel to the frozen north. There is a Goth weekend on the last weekend in April, when the place is absolutely chock-full of exhibitionist Goths (who love to pose to have their pictures taken) and Goth events. The trouble is that the town will be very crowded indeed, and many hotels will book only on a whole long-weekend basis for that weekend; also parking and picking and agreeing an eating/meeting place for lunch could be quite a problem, so on balance it might be best avoided, despite possible extra photo opportunities. I would like to suggest Saturday 13th April 2013. What do people think? It would be nice to have a very rough idea of numbers reasonably soon (at least before Christmas) so that I can start looking for a suitable meeting place - it sounds a long way ahead, but things can get booked up. A cholesterol-fest in the form of the excellent local fish and chips (there ar several emporia) might be a possibility.

andybarton Posted November 13, 2012 Share #9 Posted November 13, 2012 It would be great to get some southern softies out of bed and into some real country Whitby, Staithes and the North York moors would be a great place for a long weekend. Especially if you're used to Surrey

Bill Allsopp Posted November 16, 2012 Share #13 Posted November 16, 2012 It would be great to get some southern softies out of bed and into some real country Fortunately I'm well north of Surrey or you would be in trouble but still a fair trip, keep me in touch for details please !
andybarton Posted November 16, 2012 Share #14 Posted November 16, 2012 But you're not a southern softie, Bill. I am - I'm a mouffie souffie (according to one former colleague, everyone from the South is, regardless) - at least I was prior to my conversion 20 years ago. Now I know the truth, there is no going back.
masjah Posted November 16, 2012 Author Share #15 Posted November 16, 2012 Better and better - come on, now you've all got to visit to see what it's really like up here! (And I can arrange a visa waiver agreement for those inside the M25.)

Years ago, I once went to a Lowry exhibition in London. I got into conversation with a really nice rather elderly amateur artist who'd come down on the bus to see it (from Salford itself actually). He asked me where I was from. When I told him that I came from the other side, he said: "Eee never mind lad, tha'll live it down".
farnz Posted November 17, 2012 Share #18 Posted November 17, 2012 Tom, just make sure you are suitably attired, so as not to look conspicuous (that is "Baht 'at"). .... It always puzzled me why, when at secondary school in New Zealand, we were taught the song "On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at" and were required to sing it at just about every official school function. (I quite liked it so I never minded but I could never fathom the connection.) Pete.
