andybarton Posted May 22, 2012 Author Share #5 Posted May 22, 2012 I appear to have got myself permission, from the social diary holder. I think I might drive, and make a few days of it. Wednesday sounds like a good day. Time to do some organising.

andybarton Posted May 23, 2012 Author Share #7 Posted May 23, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Alternatively, Eurostar will sell a through ticket from St Pancras. But the Germanwings flight from Manchester is cheapest... Decisions, decisions....

Wednesday sounds like a good day If you do drive it should be easy enough from the channel to Cologne in one go. If you need an overnight stay near Calais - either going out or coming back - I can recommend the Ibis in Boulogne-sur-Mer old town (no, I don't receive payments from Ibis)... ibis Boulogne sur Mer Centre Cathedrale hotel: Map and directions for the ibis Boulogne sur Mer Centre Cathedrale hotel The town is far nicer than Calais, especially the old town where the Ibis is - there's another Ibis in the new town, but I much prefer the one I've linked to above. andybarton Posted May 23, 2012 Author Share #9 Posted May 23, 2012 Cheers There's a spot-on pub with rooms in Kent that I would probably use, before an early dart through the tunnel. It's actually the two days there and back that suddenly makes this a five day jaunt... The German railways will sell me a first class return ticket from St Pancras to Koln for less than two hundred quid (about 4-5 hours), which is worth considering. Never having used the train to Germany before, that's quite an attractive option - much better than flying really. At least I will be able to pretend to be looking at Belgium

Being a cheapskate I usually take the ferry. I prefer to spend overnight in France so that I can get an early start on the journey to where I really want to go. andybarton Posted May 23, 2012 Author Share #11 Posted May 23, 2012 This is one of the problems of living so far north - it takes bloody ages to even get to the coast. Normally, I would use the ferry too - that hour and a half is a good break from the driving, when it's taken hours to get to Dover - but if I'm starting from Kent, then the tunnel is fine. A five day pass on the tunnel was remarkably cheap, when I looked while eating my Shredded Wheat this morning
Ulrik Posted May 23, 2012 Share #12 Posted May 23, 2012 I'd prefer the train any day. Having said that, Cologne/Bonn is not a very big airport and it is a short trip (~ 20 min) by train to Köln-Hauptbahnhof. BTW: my favourite footwalk in Cologne is from Köln-Hauptbahnhof (main station) to Köln-Messe/Deutz (where the Photokina is) via the Hohenzollernbrücke (bridge over the rhine). spylaw4 Posted May 23, 2012 Share #13 Posted May 23, 2012 I'm going German Wings from Stansted, with a Photokina ticket you get free rail travel from the airport to Koln/Messe station and my hotel is 5 minute walk form there. And I agree about the walk!

Dinner, sleep overnight, breakfast, nice early start from Zeebrugge. More expensive crossing, but you avoid any need for an overnight stop en route. Of course, we always go that way if taking the car - living where we do we'd be barmy not to!

andybarton Posted May 25, 2012 Author Share #18 Posted May 25, 2012 Just found a Gasthaus 16 mins via U-Bahn to the centre, for £64 for two nights. And it doesn't look like a hostel! Booked.
andybarton Posted July 20, 2012 Author Share #19 Posted July 20, 2012 (edited) My plans have had to change, but I will now be there on the Tuesday, not Wednesday. The Gasthaus has "changed hands" and my booking has therefore been cancelled. Fortunately, I have been able to make alternative arrangements - just not at £64... veraikon Posted July 20, 2012 Share #20 Posted July 20, 2012 Reichsbahn sold me today a saver return ticket Cologne- SW-Germany for under 40€. I believe they didn´t recognize that at this time the PK is running. The only mystery of the ticket selling system was that I have to change my direct train to Cologne at Bonn . http://cdn.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/images/smilies/confused.gif
