Many of you will have heard of Frank Dabba Smith and his long association with the Leitz Family and the story of the Leica freedom train.
Frank and I have been discussing the possibility of a trip to Germany to met the Leitz family and tour the factory. Please see below the details of the trip we have arranged. Elaine and Ivor ( Red Dot Cameras) After the talks concerning the history of the Leitz family given by Frank Dabba Smith and Dr Knut Kuehn Leitz at the two most recent Leica Society annual meetings, interest has been expressed by members for a Leica Society expedition to Wetzlar. Frank has indicated his enthusiasm to lead a trip during the autumn of this year, from early morning Thursday 1st November to late Saturday 3rd November. The itinerary plans will include: a tour of Haus Friedwart given by Dr Kuehn-Leitz; a tour of the Leica factory in Solms; guided walking tours of the old town in Wetzlar and the castle in Braunfels. We would stay in the reasonably priced and centrally located Hotel Burgerhof. Frank will suggest flights from London to and from Frankfurt but participants can, of course, make their own transport and hotel arrangements. Those who are strongly interested in such a venture please get in touch with Frank directly at frank_dabbasmith@hotmail.com and he will keep you up to date of plans as they are developed. |

I was really looking forward to this trip, but I edit a magazine and 1 & 2 November is when it closes for press. So I need to be at my desk here in the UK for the whole of that week.

I saw the Frank Dabba Smith exhibition at the Leica Gallery in NY last week.
There was an exhibition of the Leitz family home photographs too. Truly excellent.
