London exhibition: Shaped by War: Photographs by Don McCullin

Given how well the recent visit to the Museum of London Street Photography exhibition went, may I propose another date for our diaries? Between 7th October 2011 and 15th April 2012, the Imperial War Museum in London will be running an exhibition “Shaped by War: Photographs by Don McCullin”.

According to the publicity ‘blurb’ on the IWM website, the exhibition will contain “Over 200 photographs, including a number previously not seen on public display; films; objects; magazines and personal memorabilia provide a unique opportunity to understand how Don McCullin’s life and work has been shaped by war and how his work has shaped awareness of modern conflict.”

Unfortunately this is not a free exhibition, and I don’t yet know how much the tickets would be. But since I get free admission as a result of being on IWM Friend, I’d be happy to check it out when it opens, then report back with a view to organising a visit early in 2012.

Best regards,

Doug

£7 for an adult - it's not on that they charge down there, but it was free for us in the impoverished and downtrodden North...

Well worth seven quid of anyone's money, and the books that accompany the exhibition (a lot more than seven quid each) are excellent and worthy of anyone's shelf space.

Well worth a visit. It isn't just his war work that's on show, though that does dominate. There are some of his later landscapes and photographs taken in India.

There are also printing notes for his famous Vietnam shell shocked soldier print. Fascinating in themselves because of the detail he wanted.

A good friend of mine gave me the book of the exhibition plus a copy of his autobiography as a present. The autobiography is a must have for anyone interested in photojournalism.

Count me in please, Doug, although I can't do any dates in Oct 2011.

Incidentally, the forum's One Challenge will be on in Palermo on the weekend of the 15th October so some members will be attending that.

Pete.

Hi - thanks for the initiative ... please count me in ... I love his work, also his landscape photos and the ones of london and londoners ... I am aorund most of October ... it would be nice to get a guided tour for our Leica group ... if that's possible ... I look forward to it - Ernst.

I have a heavy travel schedule throughout October (including the Palermo for the Chellange) and the first half of November but I/we would be extremely interested if the proposed date fitted in.

I'm on holiday in October, and from then onwards will be up to my ears in pre-Xmas publishing schedules. So I'll try to set something up for early in the new year. Once Xmas is out of the way, I'll post a message asking folks to say what dates they would find suitable.

In the meantime, I'll ask the IWM if they have any interesting Leica stuff in their reserve collection that they could dig out for us to see.

Best regards,

Doug

I must apologise for having done nothing this winter to plan this proposed trip, but a serious illness in the family gave me (temporarily) a whole new set of priorities. Modern ‘high-tech’ surgery having finally worked its miracles, I can now confidently plan for more than a few days ahead.

Alas, there are now only four weekends before the exhibition ends:

24-25 March

30 March – 1 April

7-8 April

14-15 April

24-25 March is a bit short notice, 7-8 April is right in the middle of the Easter break (when many of us may have other things planned), while 14-15 April could be busy given that these are the exhibition’s last two days.

So how about 30 March or 1 April?

I went round the exhibition is about an hour yesterday, so I should think that two hours would be ample. We could meet for lunch in the Three Stags (THE THREE STAGS a gastropub in Kennington, London OFFICIAL SITE), but would probably have to reserve one or more tables. If we finished there by 2pm (they start serving at mid-day), we would be at the Museum about five minutes later. Admission tickets to the exhibition are £7.

The museum closes at 6pm, so those of us who’d brought our fast glass would have some time to take photos in the galleries. (Photography is not allowed in the exhibition.)

Best regards,

Doug

Perhaps I've got no takers at all for this one!

OK - if I anyone indicates an interest either today or Saturday, my plan is to be at the Three Stags by noon on Sunday in order to have lunch, then go to the exhibition, with some photography in the museum afterwards.

But I've already seen the exhibition, so if no-one responds by late evening on Saturday, I'll stay at home and catch up with a bit of 'light room' work.

Best regards,

Doug
