35 Lux - Filter and Hood Question

Hello everyone. I just added a M6 and a 35mm Summilux Pre-ASPH as a back up. The lens however did not come fitted with a hood or a filter. I am wondering what the filter and hood options are for this lens. It is the first black version of the lens.

Quickly ref the hood and filter:

Unfortunately the hood is nearly as rare as chickens' teeth, and quite frequently the price reflects that, even in pretty well-used condition. The last one I bought amounted to nearly £70...from the USA (inc import duty and tax), but a couple of years ago I saw two advertised for more than £90 each. But to be fair, I have also seen more sensible dealers offering them for about £30. So be prepared to hunt around.

 

The filters - if memory serves, without me looking it up, the hood takes Series VII filters: the hood screws apart and the filter sits between the two halves. If you want to add filters to the lens, the best thing to do is save your money and a)don't, keep reading or use good quality 49mm screw-in filters BACKWARDS..with the filter between the two halves and the thread pointing OUTWARDS. Most seem to fit a treat.

 

The reason I'm skeptical about filters on this lens is that filters work best VERY close to the front element to keep any extra flare and added imperfections to a minimum; but the way the 35 'lux arrangement works filters are just a little distant from the front element for (my) comfort. Like I said, if you're going to use filters on it, use good ones. But then I suppose any lens with such a bulbous front element as this will have issues with distance between the front glass and filter.

Uhm... be aware about flter+hood... you say that yours it's a "first version": if it's REALLY like this, i.e. with s/n under 2.166.701, the filter/hood complex is not the one descrbed by Dodger, with filter to be inserted between the two parts of the hood: indeed, the old Summilux 35, like mine (1.765.xxx), uses standard E41 thread filters (which are anyway not so common - no more available from Leica) and the hood is the metal one piece OLLUX - later 12522: this is also very difficult to find at a reasonable price. OLLUX is mounted on the lens with rotate+click , externally to the mount, and does not interfere with filters.

Yup, dead right. This picture of the very first version of the lens might help you know if you need the OLLUX hood (and thus need to save even more money to get it):

...Michael, what is the serial number of your lens? The version will determine your filter and hood requirements.

The serial number is 2167539. Is there no way to use a filter only without the hood? I know this version has an issue with flare, but with such a small Lux it would be great to use without the hood, as a pocket camera.

If you have a second version 35mm Summilux-M pre-ASPH your choices are either a) the original 12504 hood that takes series VII or E48 (slim) filters or a 35mm Summicron-M ASPH hood (12526). The latter might rotate (depending on how tight it can be mounted) and you need to do some DIY solution to mount a filter. I use an E39 UVa filter with this hood and it is hold by a rubber o-ring that I glued into the hood. Vignetting is only slightly visible but the rectangular shaped hood prevents much better from flare than the original round hood:

I have found that for a 35mm pre-asph summilux, I can use the newer 12526 A42 hood with the filter-glass taken form an E46 filter fits in the front perfectly.  Requiring only a tiny spot of glue or nail varnish to stop it moving. The glass needs to be 44mm without any metalwork, and when pushing it in you will have to flex the plastic hood a little.
