James Nachtwey

I picked up a documentary DVD titled: War Photographer on the work of James Nachtwey. It was produced in 2001 before the current grip of the digital era and his B&W photography is both stunning and moving. I recommend the DVD which I found at Barnes & Noble. Since I got this dvd 4 or 5 years ago as a present, I probably watched the film -or several scenes- more than 100 times.
It´s really stunning and recommendable!

I'll certainly be viewing the DVD periodically. Not only are the images incredible but the narrative grabs you and his personal thoughts are quite profound. He is a man of peace.

I you really want to see Nachtwey's compassion in action get a copy of "Inferno."

It will take and afternoon to look through it and truly fulfills his reason for the title, ""Through me is the way to the sorrowful city. Through me is the way to join the lost people." Here is an excellent interview with him on it. But you must see the images...

And to think there is a genocide unfolding in Darfur right now and it is not being stopped.

I saw this film a few years ago when it was playing at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Truly moving and inspring. His courage and integrity are phenomenal.

It's intense...I had him sign my copy. Over a beer I asked him if he would ever take a break or a temporary departure from his genre. He simply said no, he would always document the way he does.

He is a super nice guy, here he is with Mary Ellen Mark, and Joel Peter Witkin on the left. Leica M6TTL, 35 Lux asph, Kodak BWCN....

I agree: the documentary is well worth watching. A while ago I attended the opening of a show in Amsterdam (at the Fotomuseum Amsterdam), where some more recent work was on display. I was able to take a quick shot with my M6+50 on Neopan 400:

Cool shots with Nacthwey.

I read somewhere that after almost getting killed in Iraq he is no longer covering battles.

Although he is a documentary photographer I find that his work has plenty of artistic power. He certainly knows how to frame and compose in such a way that his images create a profound impact on the psyche. He really sets the standard. I would love to see his prints up close.

'Inferno' is a life changing book - for me. Last I heard it was out of print. Up until recently (maybe still) he shoots Tri X with a Caon EOS. If you can find a copy, grab it and read and re readi it. Salgado is an equal in my eyes for the photographs he makes. Heart rending.......
