I have the same scanner but don't use the Nikon software. However, just a thought, have you selected a film type of black and white? Perhaps the software automatically removes the ICE option since you can't use it with traditional black and white films.

I use Vuescan with my Coolscan V too.
I find it gives much better results (but does need some "learning" on your part )

I use Vuescan - VueScan Scanning Software - once you get used to the rather baroque interface it gives you a lot of control - and if you buy the professional version all updates are free.
The problem with films such as FP4 is that the IR beam that looks for dust particles 'sees' the film grain as dust since it's opaque. That's probably why the Nikon software turns it off.

mmm...I find there are dirty great scratches accross all my negs when scanned, even new virgin negs. I think the scanner transport is possibly doing it?
Anyway I need to clean the images up somehow, it's a real pain. Last edited by Adrian Lord : 07/12/08 at 03:06 PM. |

Did you process these yourself?
If an example of the scratches can be found on your "Drawing Room" image http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-...wing-room.html, then they seem to be running across the frame, rather than along the line of film. Is that correct?

Don't want to wander too far OT but don't Ilford offer scanning Hi-Res 4500x3000 ? I wondered if you had tried that service which would run to 16 x 20 if my maths is OK ?

I do not think that the digital ICE works on B&W films unless they are based on C-41 chemistry. Nevertheless the ICE is not disabled on my NIKON 5000 ED when B&W and geyscale options are set.
I use the the Nikon software plus NX2 [FREE trial] and iphoto on my Mac Pro and they work very well. |
