Shutter released on blank frame overnight. Camera carried for a period before winding on for new frame that follows this one.
My two cents that this one is a seperation in the shutters at longer shutter times for some reason letting light in to the film gate? Unless the thing has found somewhere to let light in to the camera and it is writing on the film like a pin hole camera which includes something of an image rather than just a reflected or bounced around burn out mark. I checked other frames on the negative strip and this is occasionally repeated. There has to be a sensible explanation. Mine isnt it. The problem seems very different to the black wax seal up behind the dx strip that the camera was repaired for last time. Tell you what I am getting fed up with Leicas "quality" camera build. |

Nah its got to be another skanky internal reflection. Its all over the effin place. How it carries an image with it is pretty interesting.
God I love Leica shmeika. Good thing the bastard is already on its way to Solms on an unrelated issue, I would have dropped it in a lake. |

That's an odd one. Funny how my older Leica's have all been totally faultless (touch wood) so far, yet these problems seem fairly common on new MP's and M7's (won't mention M8's). Why should that be?

My two-cents:
It looks like a light leak on the rear door. It's too linear to be a pinhole leak. It shows up on a blank frame as it's all-black, and anything will show up. Look for it to appear on the sprockets of other frames, normally black. If it is not running across the entire negative, into the sprockets, then it's probably something else. "Leica it or not", This is another reason to use a camera in a fitted case. Keeps that film door tightly shut, and is another barrier to reduce leaks. |

Nothing in the sprocket holes, it is restricted to between the 24mm part of the film. It also occurs between exposed frames, ie, a as a vertical burn between frames, again not exceeding the 24mm. As such Im kind of hedging towards the internal leak from the rangefinder, maybe up behind the dx strip agian, and probably occuring during film rewind. A back door leak would be tapered from the mask I think too. The day I have frig around using a leather case to fix something that Leica havent put together properly will be the day there is a bunch of cheap recent CLA kit on eBay.

indeed it is related with the rewind of the film. that happens when you are rewinding in a very bright environment without a lenscap on. some light comes through the shutter.
had the same problem and got it serviced in solms. no problems since then. that's how my stripes were looking like. pretty much the same as yours.

Hi Rob,
first off, is this the second time this happened to the same MP? I think my MP, bought new a la carte last summer, suffers from the same problem. I asked about it, and got plenty replies in this thread: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-...s-results.html The consensus was that the shutter somehow did not close completely. As I didn't want to send back a brand new camera after just two months, I kept on working with it. Since then I've put 50 rolls through the camera, and always put the lenscap on, and the aperture on 16 while rewinding. The problem never occurred again... So now I had two reliable technicians look at the photo's I posted last august, and they came to the same conclusion; it's a shutter problem. As the guaranty expires in a few months I'm now going to send it to Solms. Cheers, Peter |
