Silver Fresco Posted August 19, 2014 Share #1 Posted August 19, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I know that there has been a lot said about this lens and I've seen some pretty stunning results, however, since I shoot film 95% of the time, I've been able to find next to nothing about using it with film (aside from one thread in the lens forum that was more speculation than anything else). After a bit of a wait I finally picked up the lens yesterday and decided to throw it on the M7... and see what happens. The photos are nothing spectacular; just walk around snaps taken with Ektar 100 and the APO. The combination does seem to pack a bit of a punch and I was pleasantly surprised by the results. The scans are straight from the lab, so nothing fancy there. WIll get more serious about seeing what it does in the coming weeks with different films. Anyway, see what you think. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks! Brett. Welcome, dear visitor! Michael Hiles Posted August 19, 2014 Share #6 Posted August 19, 2014 I like the one of the tugboat. Atmospheric. Seems to me that from a computer screen it is impossible to make any judgment about the technical quality of an image (unless you provide a highly enlarged section of an image so we can see things at the level of a few pixels). If you had said they were from a 3.5 Elmar I would have believed it. I also don’t see why a lens would be world beating on a digital camera, and not perform as well on a film camera, or vice versa. If I am missing something, I would like to be re-educated. But I like the pictures.
kinch123 Posted August 19, 2014 Share #7 Posted August 19, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I live in Hong Kong too. Can I ask which lab you generally use? I use Dot-Well and am happy with them. However always good to know about other options! Gotta get my hands on this lens one day too!
philipus Posted August 19, 2014 Share #8 Posted August 19, 2014 Nice snaps. Evidently a good lens will produce good results regardless of the medium. I am, however, surprised that Ektar would look as saturated as this. Must be the lab's scanner settings. I would be interested in seeing straight from the scanner type of scans. Silver Fresco Posted August 20, 2014 Author Share #9 Posted August 20, 2014 Hi Philip and kinch 123, sorry for the late reply. Philip, you raise a number of valid points. Ektar has always been a bit hit and miss for me, so I was surprised to see it come out that saturated. Was possibly due to the scanning. I also agree that it's hard to judge the quality or capabilities of the lens on a computer screen. However, I think the quality that I've seen in other photos will definitely come through in prints and much better scanning (at least I hope so ). Kinch, I had the photos developed and scanned at Dot-Well; was in TST and they were nearby (and I needed to get out of that downpour yesterday afternoon). I also go there for the re-spooled Kodak Vision they sell. My usual lab is Photo Scientific in Stanley Street. By the way, if your interested in getting the lens, message me and I'll give you the details of where I bought it. Brett.
stephen.w Posted September 16, 2014 Share #10 Posted September 16, 2014 The 50 APO is not a lens that I will ever likely own, but these shots make me want to give Ektar another go.
lysistrata Posted October 11, 2014 Share #11 Posted October 11, 2014 I live in Hong Kong too. Can I ask which lab you generally use? I use Dot-Well and am happy with them. However always good to know about other options! Gotta get my hands on this lens one day too! Dot-Well is relatively cheap and efficient, but I'll put a question mark on the quality. I used the lab for two or three labs several years ago when I arrived in HK and found my negatives are scratched. Then I switched to Colorlux Express in Wan Chai. Happy with the results.
