Any photolabs in Benelux that also scan photos?

Hi everybody

I was a film user for 20 years until I joined digital in 2009. My last years as a film photographer, I scanned my own slides and negatives using a Nikon scanner and Vuescan. Works very well but takes time.

Now that I'm about to begin using film in parallel with digital, I am wondering if there are any photolabs in The Netherlands or Benelux that also offer the service to scan the slides/negatives - does anyone know of any?

On my own scanner I get 25 mpix scans and I am looking for the equivalent quality.

Thank you very much

Philip

Hi Philip,

There is nothing better than to scan ourselves films.

And it's cheaper and the money spent if scanned by someone else, is to purchase films.

.... but this is only my opinion!

I scanned myself all my film black white (which I developed myself) like color (by a laboratory at the moment for lack of time)

Best

Henry

PS: I would like to add this: the Epson can scan 24 poses all at once !

Thank you very much to both of you for your replies. I appreciate them very much.

Seeing the cost of scanning at Eyesonmedia I doubt that it would really be worth it for me as a private individual and hobby photographer. That said, they use drum scanners so the quality should be higher than what I can obtain at home. Perhaps an option for the most important images.

To scan oneself is the best but it does take a long time for one roll, usually 1hr+ on my Nikon Coolscan V ED. It only scans up to six images at a time and is quite slow. This is a limitation because it requires me to attend to it regularly and changing the film strip.

But I didn't see that the Epson V700/750 could scan 24 frames. It seems it scans 12 frames at the time or am I missing something? That's in any event better than my current film scanner.

That said, it seems flatbed negative or slide scanning doesn't really match the quality of dedicated film scanners.

I am wondering, now, if I should upgrade to a used Coolscan 9000 ED which scans 12 (2x6 strips) frames in one go.

But looking at for instance Ebay it seems prices of used film scanners have rocketed with some people asking for 2-3 times the price of what my scanner initially cost. The 9000 ED is even more. What an incredible development.

Cheers

Philip

Hi Philipus, I would also do my own scans. Until a few days ago I used a LS4000ED Coolscan with a SA-30 film adapter. With this combination I scan an entire film in one go. Unfortunately the SA-30 only works on the 4000 and 5000 Coolscan and as far as I know not on the V.

Doing a whole film in one go saves a lot of time, `I can do other things while the scanner is working. I even leave the house and let the scanner work.

My LS4000 began to falter a few weeks ago and while the 4000 was only replaced in 2005 by the LS5000 Nikon does not repair the scanner anymore.

Prices of the Coolscans have indeed rocketed, so beware of buying Nikon 2nd hand.

Because I needed to scan some negatives for the internet and my Coolscan didn't worked anymore I bought a new HP Scanjet G4050 for 49€. Normally it costs more. Even at 49€ it is not worth the money. The results I obtained were even not good enough for the internet.

I posted some pictures on my blog. It's in Dutch, I suppose that is not a problem for you. I think people who don't speak Dutch will still understand the pictures.

I'm convinced the Epson 700-750 is much better but I still have my doubts.

Surfing the internet I learned that flatbed scanners don't auto-focus they even don't focus. With the Epson you have to regulate the height of the filmholder by trial and error. Not what I expect from a scanner which is aimed at the professional.

When I don't succeed fixing my Coolscan I probably will buy a Plustek 7600. It is cheaper and scans faster then my Coolscan did.

Thanks for posting the comparison between the Coolscan an the Scanjet. Very well written and interesting.

I have read a few scanner reviews over at Imaging Resource and recently discovered the Microtek ArtixScan M1/F1. F1 seems to be the current version (at least in Europe) according to Microtek's site (in the US the Microtek online store sells the M1 for $600).

Here are two scan tests done on the M1 at Imaging Resource which are useful to read:

Scanner Review: Microtek ArtixScan M1

Scanner Review: Microtek ArtixScan M1

Both use Silverfast. When I compare with my own scans in Vuescan using the V ED the M1 results seem to be at least as good. The Microtek F1 costs more than the V700/750, but not much more, about 950€ (the 750 goes for 630€ here in Holland) but offers a few very imporant improvements (imho). Plus I believe it includes Silverfast Ai, which sells alone for quite a lot alone.

Both the F1 and the M1 have autofocus and seem to be the only flatbed scanners that do. As you noted yourself, since the V700/750 lacks autofocus, the only way to adjust focus is to adjust the height of the negative/slide from the glassbed using small feet. I agree that's not what I would have expected from such a scanner. The autofocus feature is one I like very much on my V ED.

They also offer "glassbed-less" scanning, which is something of a problem for scanning negatives and slides because the glass bed introduces distortion and adds another surface on which there may be dust. They solve this by allowing insertion of the frames in a separate space below the glassbed. They apparently also use a better way to keep the negatives/slides flat than the V700/750.

The F1 (but not the M1) also offers Digital ICE, which is great and something I would want to have if I were to replace the V ED. And on top of all this, they also offer 12 frames batch scanning which is pretty good (there seems to be two versions of the M1 (but not of the F1 afaik) a normal version and a Pro version; the difference is inter alia that several film holders are included so one can load one while another is being scanned, which saves time).

cheers

Philip

Hi Philipus, the Plustek 7600 cost regarding the software package 275 or 375€. http://plustek.com/downloads/opticfilm/The_Plustek_7600i_Ai_Scanner_Rev_1.pdf

But I'm not convinced it makes sense to disgard your Coolscan.

Batch scanning is a good thing, but every scan has to pass trough PS and you can do the PS while you are scanning.

I saw the concurrently ongoing thread on the Plustek, very interesting indeed. You're of course right regarding batch scanning. It only removes one part in the processing chain.

I think (and certainly hope) that my Coolscan still has a few more years to give but my concern is more to avoid what has happened to many reasonably-priced film scanners, extinction.
