Default Help with C1 please

I'm a new user and have been using PS CS for years and more recently Aperture. I have a D2x as ell as an M8.

I am at a loss as to how to use C1 - sorry if I am being thick!

I either seem to be stuck is C1 after conversion or the DNG file open in ACR after conversion. I can't find any books/manuals to help and the C1 help - well isn't helpful.

It would be nice to try out C1 ( I am using 4.8.1) to see how the RAW conversion engines compare.

If anyone would like to share a simple workflow for me to work with CS1 and PS CS3 that would also be helpful.

In C1 Process the M8 DNG file to a TIFF file. Yes there is a option to process it to a DNG but that option will only get you into another RAW processor. The TIFF can be opened in PS, any version.

Also there is a setting someplace in C1 that will send the TIFF file to PS. If PS is not open then it will open and load the TIFF file.

Personally I don't like C1 to much and only use it rarely if I think maybe I can get better results from it on a image or 2. But rarely do I see any better results.
Others will strongly disagree with me on that point. That's OK I can take it.

Yep--to each his own I prefer C1 over anything else out there for M8 raw processing.

1) So copy your RAW files to a folder
2) Open C1 and find the "explorer" view and open the folder
3) Right click on the folder and select "set as output folder"
4) Wait for C1 to create thumbnails
5) Adjust for wb, exposure, curves, etc...
6) Go the the process tab, select TIFF or JPEG and hit process.

That's the basics. There's a movie on how to use C1 on the Phase One site. You should watch it The help file is also worth reading

Be sure to check how each of the RAW developers handles chromatic aberration in M8 DNG files:

Have a look at this thread. It is, I found, at least in part not the lens or the sensor, but the RAW converter that is essential to handle this problem:

I can only find the 'Pro' one which offers more info but not so relevant to a lowly C1 user like me.

I guess I'll have to see how the M8 (and D2x) files fare comparing C1 and ACR and decide for myself. It would be a shame not to get the best out of the Leica glass and M8 files.

Try the steps I suggested and then ask questions. C1 really does pay off if you take a day to learn it (and while LR or ACR may seem easier up front--they also take a day or more to learn to optimise IMO).

There is a 280.5 MB QuickTime tutorial on Capture One 4. I wish I could reconstruct where I got it. The Phase One site is done in Flash, which provides no useful URLs for anything. It may be in the download for Capture One 4.8.1.

If you can use Aperture, it will not take you long to become familiar with Capture One 4. Aperture will not become irrelevant to you, because Capture One does not have a print engine. It just does RAW conversion based on data, not reverse engineering, and not guesswork. It is well worth your effort to get the best possible RAW conversions from your M8.
