PAPER PROFILES IN IMAGEPRINT RIP

Recommended Posts

We use Imageprint RIP for printing colour and black and white on various printers with various papers.

One of the reasons we purchased Imageprint was to avail of the better printer/paper profiles - the assumption is that the generic profiles made by Epson, for example, for their papers are not as good as the ones developed by Imageprint. We would assume that Imageprint would extract more colours and tones from the papers (Epson would be more 'conservative'if you like). A bit like comparing custom printer/paper profiles to the generic ones produced by the printer manufacturers.

We use a lot of Epson papers on an Epson R2880 printer eg the ultrafine smooth art . When we softproof an image in photoshop, using the generic Epson profile for the fine art paper, and the Imageprint profile for the same printer/paper,the gamuts seem to be the same. We turn on the out-of-gamut warning in softproof and we can see almost no differences. We would have expected to see less out-of-gamut colours and tones using the Imageprint printer/paper profile.

We know that the dithering techniques is better and more detail in the shadows etc but we are surprised by this.

Are we expecting too much?

Yes.

I hate ImagePrint. The user interface is terrible and outdated. My dongle stopped working and they wanted to charge me to replace it. There security system, but I am suppose to pay when it fails. I have not gone back to ImagePrint. May try the Cone system in 2015, which functions using much cheaper RIP software.

I am not being responsive to your specific comment, but I needed to get that off my chest.

I have to say my experience with Imageprint has been quite the opposite. Whenever I have had issues with my software they have been unbelievably responsive and usually spot on in get getting things fixed. You are right in that the user interface may not be the best but I usually use their Print Through Application option via Lightroom. I have found their profiles to be significantly better than the standard alternatives. This is just my opinion.
