Opening old .TIF from my M8 files in C1

For some time I found that my pictures I made with my M8 until September 2007 could not be opened in Capture1 anymore. These have the extension .TIF.

At that time I downloaded the files directly with a USB cable; and I used the C1 that came with my camera.

Somewhere later in C1 releases (I think starting with C1 6 Pro), my old .TIF files could not be opened anymore; they display as small as a thumbnail in the viewer window; with a black line on top and bottom. Often with a strange colorcast.

 

This implies that C1 is not backwards compatible.

And C1 customer support does not understand the issue at al (up to stating doubts these files are from the M8 at all).

 

In LR the files can be opened - and I can save them in LR6.0 as DNG, such that I can handle them in C1 (my developer). I only have LR demo versions.

 

• Is that a common problem with C1?
  
• How to handle this?
  

 

I don't want to buy LR for just this reason (I have organized my files in the C1 way and I understand I will loose they whole kind of organization with a file structure in LR; and I don't like the LR-way of producting a JPG (by exporting Arghhh).

You are sure that they are native M8 files?

I had the old C1 (I think it was version 1.5) which came with the M8 and I have the same issue with the old C1 files.

My M8 only had DNG and JPG, never TIF.

 

Do you use Mac or Windows version. You should be able to open the TIF in Windows.

 

As a solution, download a trial version of LR and give it a try …

I have the MAC version.

I initially did not have a MAC with a slot for the SDHC memory cards, so I used the USB cable that came with my camera.

I have always been surprised there was a difference in extension, from handling the one way - using cable - and from using the card for file transfer.

And yes they are genuine RAW files.

I ran out of grace period (trial days) of LR.

I have a few thousand .TIF files, so it is a lot of work to convert them.

Have you tried changing the extention to .DNG and seeing if they open ok? Obviously try this first with a single file.

 

I seem to remember that there was a problem with Windows chaning the extention to .TIFF when files were imported by a direct camera connection, but can't recall the same problem with a Mac.

Now try some batch file extension conversion tool . . . but then of course the saved settings will not match anymore. But that is better than nothing. C1 fools up the CaptureOne settings folder once in a while anyway so I am sort of accustomed to that. :roll eyes:

Just run them through Adobe’s DNG converter, free download from the Adobe website. Or change the extension as mentioned above. There is little difference between a TIFF file and a DNG file, so some programs under Windows tend to read the file wrong and save it with the wrong extension. Sandisk Rescue Pro for instance.

Great help. Works good, and easy;

- justa comment for Adobe: too bad I can't select (filter) .tif files in the input, because then I could realy fast batch process them in my whole (sub)directory at once; now the existing .dng's in a file would also be copied again.
