I am very happy that Leica is going to have great success with the M8. It looks to be a fantastic camera. It is not my style of shooting and not in my budget but it may be the financial success of Leica and the Leica mistique.
I did purchase a DMR and two lenses some time ago for my R8 and for me that was a huge investment. Yet I, and I believe many others, still are waiting for some really functional firmware that befits the technical quality of the DMR and R8/9. Has Leica completely forgotten about their DMR customers? Where is the next revision of the firmware? As we all know Ver 1.2 was a disaster. I know there is a strained situation with Imicon (sp). Yet from a customer perspective that is Leica's problem, not mine. Another software revision was rumored to be in the works many months ago probably to be introduced right after Photokina. Yet here we sit still waiting for a new revision and there is almost no talk about it. I have a huge investment in an R-DMR system it is only marginally functional. It certainly does not support the Leica dedication to quality and industry technological leadership. Frankly, the competition for SLRs has much better software and almost as good image quality. Yes, there is nothing as smooth and well made as Leica, but I did not spend all that money for a paperweight. Isn't there an implied contract between Leica and DMR customers that the equipment would be functional? I do not consider it now so. Leica, do not forget the DMR! Get the firmware out to make the DMR an equal element of the Leical product line and a continuation of the Leica dedication to excellence. And get it out soon. John Stitt |

Jbstitt,
I have been using my R8 / DMR conbination for nearly a year now. I agree that the firmware version 1.1 contains bugs, but I only found them during my brief 'play time' with the camera. During my regular use of the camera I never 'enter the bug(s) area'. If you consider that your DMR is not functional then I am happy to make you an offer to purchase your DMR, as I am sure I will get a cheap deal from you. The results I am obtaining from my functional DMR are stunning, and yes I have tried the non German made 'competition'. With this in mind I consider the cost / performance of the DMR a bargain. My DMR batteries are now charged ready for a corporate job to be done tomorrow. I can't wait, I love using it! Regards Mark |

There was a Leica Day on Oct 25 at my local Leica dealer. When I asked the Leica rep about the DMR firmware update v1.3, I was told that it should be ready in December.
So December it should be ... |

That means that they won't sell any more, not that support ends. We know that Leica has been working on it. It is meant to come out around now, so let's wait a few weeks and see.

I have both M8 and DMR and do not consider the company policy very good in abandoning the DMR and promoting the M8 Adobe marriage. Cheers |

Oh my … the new firmware (1.3) people were waiting for when this thread was active has been released in June 2007.

It certainly wasn't June 2007, but it was before Christmas, and it does answer 99% of the issues with the previous firmware for the DMR.
I am very happy with v1.3

My mistake – it was July 23, not June (the firmware was actually finished in June, but released in July).

I was interested to see when browsing the Kodak web-site that the sensor used in the DMR has been discontinued. The DMR is a "done" product but seems to have been much less problematic than the M8.

Mark,
I wonder: - how many sensors are on the "spares" shelf at the factory in case they're needed, - what the shelf life of an unused sensor is - do they have a sell-by date, - if there'll be an upgrade programme for the DMR? Graeme |

..well...by knowing the facts it is easier to accept the truth. High profile companies do not abondon products produced to professionals. Well some do- like Leica seems to be doing by leaving the R9DMR software and firmware production as it is. Cheap trick just in order to get the M8 on the market. (so called customer production development without back-up).
At least they should have the common manners in order to get the DMR DNGs and M8 produced DNGs work in the same program. And the best choice is Flexcolor as that was the way it started. Some SW guys should make at least a proper conversion program (not from adobe) for Flexcolor based DNGs to start with. Just hope that the people at Solms get wise or wiser during 2008 or 2009 I do not care...Cheers |

The DNGs are just ordinary DNGs; they are in no way “FlexColor based”. FlexColor was a natural choice for the DMR back then, as the DMR was developed with a little help from Imacon, the developers of FlexColor. However, FlexColor will be phased out as a raw converter (it will live on as a scan software) when Hasselblad/Imacon introduces Phocus, so FlexColor won’t continue being a viable choice for any future camera.

You must have heard about proper business manners. According to those most deals are done. There must be some dispute between the little help from Imacon in the DMR development deal. Otherwise it would have continued to lead to support the coming M8 sensor and related software. Everybody with common sense know the reason. Unless it is unclear I feel sorry for you.
However, Leica as a traditional company with its financial problems (common knowledge) should not abandon old customers and leave them without product support. Makes you wonder....But take your time - there might be a future position in the marketing support for you...All the best. Take Care Woland |

They used to have financial problems, but thankfully, these days are over. That Leica left their customers without product support is simply untrue. A few days ago, you did revive a one year old thread on the firmware version 1.3 that DMR owners were waiting for back then, stating “Well the awaiting has ended. There is no new firmwire or SW for the DMR.” – apparently unaware of the fact that firmware version 1.3 was released 7 months ago. What are you complaining about?

this is really seen through your very naive eyes! The last FW uodate for the DMR did NOT bring features a lot of us were waiting for, like SDHC support, improved WB (like in the M8 today) etc. So actually this FW 1.3 pissed lot of customers off. And some took the decision to sell this expensive piece of s.... before it lo |
