mishima, I will do some tests later. Will keep you posted. Personally i feel the Photo Processor should be identical, all the Settings you see in LX3 you see in DLUX4, I havent found 1 part that is unique to either cam. Other than the RAW output for DLUX4 is RWL while LX3 is RW2.

My intention is to see how real world Point & shoot application will vary in those 2 cameras. I use Saturation -1 and NR -1 because I found Panasonic tend to Oversaturate & Over NR. |

These werent, which was my deleted post, and others;
new-1.jpg Plus there is the variation in post processing. Theres a perfectly vaid reason for buying the Leica model, that is you like the look of the thing better, or it makes you feel good I thin kit is a bit of a shame it isnt, or doesnt seem quite as well built as the Nikon or the Canon but you cant have everything. Whats the AF like on the thing? I do like the spot AF in manual focus mode, that is a bit of a winner. |

The reduced saturation in the LX3 shots (CAM B above) relate to the minus settings in Saturation (and Noise reduction) then? They do look a bit cleaner, but that probably isnt fair to the DLux in that instance.

AF on the DLUX4 or LX3? I think both are identical, the Spot AF is neat, Sony implemented it in R1 quite a while ago. I believe the difference are greater in Previous Gen DLUX3/LX2, the LX2 cannot seem to tweak much from the Picture Adjustment even you minus Saturation or Contrast or NR. |

Finally did sum comparo shots today. I did it in a shopping mall with a good mixture of color n B&W shots ranging from ISO100, 200, 400 so we can see the differences if any. Sorting the pics now. Will upload in a short while. All comparo shots are done with exact same settings on both cams to see the diff in JPEGs.

Ok. Just uploaded the pics to my Photobucket so here they come. All pics were done with exact same settings on both cams with no tweaks to Saturation, NR n all that. I only used S +1 sharpening in camera for all shots in both LX3 n DL4. I left all other settings as standard to see the difference in the JPEG processing. All pics shot with AWB.

Hi Everyone,
I just joined this forum and this is my first post. I now own the older Panasonic LX1 and am about to spring for either the LX3 or D-Lux 4. I have two questions: First- is the barrel distortion something that is automatically corrected in the camera, or post camera? Second, if I buy one of these, (I'm leaning toward the Leica) is the provided software Mac-compatible? I shoot mostly jpeg but will occasionally shoot raw. Thanks for any insights! |

I bought a D-Lux 4 last Monday and I haven't looked back. As a long time M8 user I am impressed with all aspects of this tiny camera. The detail on RAW shots is nothing short of spectacular. Here's a shot I took yesterday whilst walking the dog. This was pulled directly into CS4 via ACR 5.2 with no correction. Shadow detail is very good. Slightly sharpened.

It almost appears that the shots from the Lux 3 are a little cleaner? I'd expect the D Lux 4 to be better considering it's price tag? I wonder if we just blinded by the little red dot? I love Leica's but since selling my D Lux 3 and getting the Ricoh GRD 2 I haven't looked back!

BOTH cameras produce FANTASTIC photos! But I like the USA 3 year warranty which surely is worth the extra $$ if you use the $150 rebate~ it doesn't hurt so bad to spend the extra money. And if you did sell it, I'm sure you'd get a much higher price than trying to sell the Panasonic. I do own a V-Lux1 and really like it. But I need something more is a small camera than my Canon SD400 and this D-Lux4 seems to be the ticket. Guess I'm going to be ordering the Leica.
