Default TTL Flash on M8

I can't recall what thread it was but someone on the forum was wondering if the 6-bit lens code was needed to use TTL flash on the M8. It isn't and I just had that confirmed by a contact at Leica in Germany. The code allows two features related to flash:

Auto slow synch with automatic sensing of lowest shutter speed threshold.

Auto zooming of certain flashes to match various focal lengths.

Again, this is from the horse's mouth.

Cheers,

Sean

Thanks for the heads up, Sean ... the discussion was in the Voigtlander lenses on M8 thread and also Guy mentioned it in a reply to my post in the "When we'll see images ..." thread.

Thanks Simon. There have been so many M8 threads on so many forums that I can't keep of track of what was where, etc. In any case, now that question is answered.

Cheers,

Sean

Sean, I don't understand from above if the 6-bit code adds anything to the TTL capabilities.

The material on the Leica site says that TTL flash is achieved by measuring a pre-flash. That's different from the more-automatic TTL function in the M7, which measures the light of the flash instead of the preflash, if I understand correctly.

Thanks for any additional information.

As an aside, how come Leica doesn't post their user manuals online?
The manufacturers to the far west of us, do this. I have found it extremely useful, for example, to go to a Panasonic site to view the manual for their videocam's.

Regards,

Bill it good be a simple matter of the firmware is not ready yet or it's functions and will probably a last minute printing to get in the boxes. Not sure but a PDF of the manual would be nice for sure

Hi Bill,

The 6-bit code is useful for the two functions above but it doesn't directly effect the TTL system. I'll talk about the flash system in more detail once I've had a chance to test it.

Don't know about the manuals.

Cheers,

Sean

You can download the M7 instuction book in PDF formant from the web-site and I assume you'll be able to do the same with the M8 once it's finalised.

I expect there are no printed manuals yet. Printing the manual is something they can do pretty quickly once the content is finalised so they're wise to be holding off doing that. Last thing they want to do is to pulp 5000 manuals becuase of a late change.
