Default new epson r2880 printer

Has anyone tried the new Epson printer yet? What kind of results? (And yes I've read the complaints about ink size/usage!

There's a review in the latest LFI. It's beaten by a neck by the HP B9180. Not much in it though.

...which I understand needs to be continuously powered. Thanks for the LFI link though. In the FAQ there's an interesting piece on sensor cleaning: http://www.lfi-online.de/ceemes/page...ns_and_answers. No doubt we'll all be rushing to the chemist's to ask for enema syringes.

I am unpacking mine now.

Will let you know how I get on.

The photo dealers in the UK have it at around £550 but I bought it for £487 including next day delivery from morecomputers. The saving will pay for an ink set

Build quality seems good and it looks like my friend's 3800.

Hope it prints as well!

Nigel

Wow! That's a keen price. I look forward to your findings,

Hi Nigel,

how does it go with your R2880? I'm considering to buy one, too.

Best,
Greg

Hi Greg

Comments so far after a week of use.

Very easy to set up and get printing ( I have had an Epson R800 for four years and have used an Epson 3800)

Printed a few BW exhibition prints with the Photo Matte cartridge installed on to Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl and they were very good.

A colour print of a difficult landscape looks exactly the same as a print produced a couple of months ago on an Epson 3800.

I make fine art prints of my wife's paintings and the five different files printed so far are excellent and again identical to the prints made on the 3800 on Epson Matte Heavyweight Paper.

Printing fine art greetings cards on non Epson A4 220gsm Matte Photo paper coated both sides gave accurate colour using the Archival Matte profile.

Hoping to try some Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Silk paper soon.

When you select the profile for the paper the printer makes sure you have the correct black cartridge installed by blocking further progress in the menus. Luckily I don't make many glossy prints. I have been printing from Photoshop CS2 and not tried prints from Lightroom yet. It is important to choose Off (No Color Adjustment) in the Printer Color Management menu if you choose to let Photoshop Determine Colors (which I do).

Cannot comment on ink useage yet as I am still on the ink set that came with the printer.

Nigel

Comparing the specs with the 3800 (and ignoring the size difference) it appears that the meaningful differences from an image quality standpoint are (1) the 2880 has the new Vivid Magenta inks and the 3800 does not and (2) the 2880 shows higher resolution (5760 x 1440 vs. 2880 x 1440 for the 3800). Does this result in any visible advantage for the 2880?

...sounds a very attractive printer, shame it doesen't have a 100/10 network connection like the Epson 3800 - does anyone know what the minimum droplet size is ?

Specs show 3 vs. 3.5 for the 3800.
