No, because I can't get it to support DMR files

What's your secret? How do you get it to recognise DMR files, without blowing highlights to pink?

Which version of Aperture, which digital camera update, OS, etc?

mac OS 10.5.3

Aperture version 2.1

Andy. As a I look at the imported files, they show as " R9 - Digital Back DMR " in Camera Model (in the exif of the Metadata window).

Just about 1% of them have the purple blown highlights; all the rest look grate. Since it is just this 1% that has the problem I am wandering if It is worth using it this way until an upgrade fixes the problem. I think that just to manage the files it is worth it.

The problem will never be fixed, so you will just have to live with it, I'm afraid.

They are doing something about it since now in Aperture2 the DMR file is recognizes as it so I see some hope in the future.

in the meantime; I can export the ones that have the problem, work in them in cs1, make a tif file of them and reimport them in Aperture. At least this way I can catalog etc.. all my files and have them all in one place.

here is the same file that was exported from aperture, imported in cs1, made a tif export from cs1 and imported this tif version into aperture.

I agree Conrad.

The massive hardware requirements and the lack of proper acceptance of DMR files makes Aperture a non starter really. Eoin and Sandy were very helpful in getting DMR files recognised, but it was a shame that Apple never supported the DMR.

Now, IF the R10 files are the same as DMR ones, we may have some hope of support. If not, then it's "forget it" time.

problem solved with mac os 10.5.5

So much for "never."

This is the beauty of Apple's approach of putting their RAW conversion in the OS. It's brilliant as is Aperture. Sooner or later people will get it through their heads that Aperture is a PRO application and that Apple will not stop until it is the de facto standard.fro professional photographers. Count on it.

I've been 100% Aperture since October of 2006... and never looked back.

That's interesting news.... I just exported my whole library and imported it to Lightroom. But is this an aperture feature or an OS-X feature because if it were an OS-X feature I should see it working in preview which it doesn't at least for me. But maybe just my computer? Would appreciate if someone could check that.

OK, OK...

This is very welcome, and kudos to Apple.

It's a pity that they have taken so long, with DMR using Apple users having moved onto something else years ago. They'll never get them back now. I for one am not going to go out and buy another copy.

Why is it that the DNG format, which I understood was created by Adobe to become the industry standard for raw files, seems to make so much implementation trouble? Obviously, a DNG from one camera is different from aDNG from another camera?! Why is that so? This is something I would really like to understand.

And has anybody having trouble with Aperture tried running the Adobe DNG Converter first? This is what I do routinely with my M8 and DMR files because I get reduced file sizes with bigger internal previews. I also don't get why the M8, for example (or any other camera, for that matter), does not write DNG files of this kind in the first place.

My understanding is that the DNG format is just a wrapper for the real RAW file. In other words it isn't really a camera independant format. I'm happy to be corrected.

As for why the M8 doesn't provide a larger preview, I'm guessing that's due to the resulting size of the uncompressed DNG files. As to why it doesn't compress the DNG files, I'd guess that's because the resulting extra processing would slow down the writing of the DNGs.

When I used Expression Media - I've now swapped to Lightroom - I had to run all the M8 files through the Adobe DNG convertor to get a resonable preview.
