Ask at an Apple store - they will have Firewire cables. I'm surprised it didn't come with one.

Congratulations. I also have one of those and think it's the best scanner this side of an Imacon. I would say it's on par or within spitting distance of the 343.

Did you get the glass negative holder? It's a must if you want sharp corners. It's what really makes that scanner.

thrid, this was won off ebay but the chap didnt have the glass holder

i will order that separately, i heard that it makes a big difference

Definitely should have come with the Firewire lead, but not worth wingeing about.

My view on the glass carrier is that it is expensive (such is life) but not really necessary. It can cause Newton rings, a much worse 'feature' that 'soft' corners. Personally, I don't have a problem with soft corners because of the technique I use to 'set' the film in the carrier. Basically, clamping the two film edges in the holder and then carefully holding one clamp firm while 'stretching' the other evenly before locking. YMMV. Worth trying to see if you are satisfied.

I agree, it is a fantastic scanner for the price. Mine is the Coolscan8000 but not much difference. Sadly, I haven't done any medium format work for some time. Must get back to it.

I highly recommend the glass holder. It isn't cheap (circa $300), but I ran some tests and it really does make a noticeable difference. No problems with Newton rings so far. The glass does appear to be treated to help avoid these.

What are some of the differences in the Coolscan models, Jackal?

Based on what I can read, some of the specs look very similar, but I know the devil is in the details sometimes.

I've thought about buying a Coolscan to digitise all of my slides.

CS5000 (12bit color), max neg size 35mm

SCS5000ED 16bit color, max neg size 35mm

SCS9000ED 16bit, max neg size 6x9.

Only the 9000 can use a glass neg carrier, but the 5000 series can use bulk feeders and film strips.

I have both the SCS5000ED and the 9000ED. Although both are 16bit, the 9000ED seems to produce better tonality. I'm guessing that the 9000ED uses better quality A/D converters etc, which it ought to at more than twice the price.

Thank you for the information. I guess if I get one, I should try to get a 9000 like Jackal. I thought maybe the lower priced ones could use glass carriers (I won't need to scan medium format though).

The 5000ED can use the optional the FH-3 neg holder. It doesn't use glass, but it does make a difference. You do get sharper corners, than with the regular feeder (but it's not as good as the glass holder.)

The glass holder for the 9000 makes a difference for all formats.

Where are you located.

I'm in the UK and bought one from B&H for less than half the price.

No customs duty was charged on the way in, so it was a bargain in comparison.

I believe it makes a big difference, but no point in banging my drum.

Didn't do anything. Goods arrived without a charge. This has happened many times, but not always. Low value stuff seems to get through OK.
