you need Olympus pattern flash for D3
anything else 'might' work, but you risk frying the camera as well

I agree with Rob.
I have a Metz 40MZ3i and SCA 3502-Mod4 adapter that I use on my D2 (which also can work with a SF20 and SF24) very successfully. However this refuses to work on my D3 / L1 , until I swapped the SCA adapter on the flash to the SCA 3202-Mod5 Have a careful look at the Metz web site, which is probably the most informative regarding compatable external flashes for Leica cameras- <http://www.metz.de/en/photo_electronics/sca_adaptersuche.143.html> Also particularly as both D3 and L1 User Manuals reference only the Panasonic Flashes which are similar to those from Olympus. Don't forget the base genetic donor of the D3 comes from the Olympus 4/3 via Panasonic engineering changes. |

Four-thirds it has to be. I have an Olympus FL-36 on my D3 which does the business admirably. There are smaller and larger models and a couple of wireless options recently announced. Tried the SF20 to begin with, but it was a non-starter.
