New iMac, all pictures seem a little dark

Hi there, changed my iMac and bought the new 5k model. Now, looking at all my pictures (coming from the back-up) they look a little dark and could use some other changes. I always thought that the pics on my old iMac were looking brighter than on my laptop, however, I put that down to the less powered display (battery saving).

Somebody has a similar experience? Any quick way to check the monitor settings?

Most monitors render far too bright and contrasty for decent processing. I would suggest your new iMac is simply better. Don’t forget to calibrate it properly. No screen is acceptably calibrated out of the box.

Not noticed my photos looking darker on my new 5k iMac. They do seem to look 'better' as compared with my old iMac, but that could just be me trying to justify parting with £3,000+ on a computer I didn't really 'need'. ;)

If you want to get the most from your screen, you need to calibrate it

Something like a Colormunki smile will let you just calibrate your monitor, and more advanced kits will let you create printer profiles too, for a much more accurate end-to-end solution.

Make the screen brighter or dimer with F1 & F2 .

This will NOT change the file however.

Bring it into LR or PS and use the histogram. On a normal picture, it should go from the left to right edges and not be bunched up at one end. Notice I said normal picture. A COAL PILE or a snow scene will be bunched up at one end.
