Hello Wayne,
The focusing confirmation seems to work great with all sorts of adapters and tubes. I use a Visoflex adapter (pictured with the Hektor 12.5cm 1:2.5) and it works like a charm. |

You probably have it figured out correctly. I read that one of the suppliers would code the lens adapter to what ever you want. Perhaps somebody could suggest he code them to f1. |

I'm still not understanding, you still have to manually stop the lens down to the taking aperture before releasing the shutter-? correct?
or can you focus at full aperture while the lens is set to the taking aperture and the adaptor stops the lens down during exposure? |

Yes--you must manually stop down. On all the modern EOS cameras, which meter through the lens, this will work fine with the meter (though perhaps not with all the funky metering programs--I use, and always have used--the spot meter on the 5d and 1ds2). So my workflow is to meter and set at the right aperture, open up to focus (if I need to--I don't always need to) then stop down to take the shot. Sounds onerous, but it's really not that bad at all. When I'm shooting with the focus confirming adapter, I don't need to open back up to focus at all, because even if it looks dark-ish, the little light tells me I've got the focus. BTW--I don't usually shoot much below f 5.6 anyway, so it's not usually so dark I can't see...though there have been exceptions on the dancefloor ![]()

Has anybody compared the the 5D+R lenses images to the Leica DMR + Rlenses ? I don't have DMR and what I've seen so far the Canon 30D + R lenses combo dioesn't quite give the Leica images I'm after. The Canon chip is definitely not the same as the kodak chip in DMR.

If you are going to use the 5D with the leica glass, a really nice thing to have is the E-es focusing screen which is only about $35. I have the happypageHK focus confirm adapter and find that while its pretty accurate, its very hard to get the light to come on. I use my eye and forget about the confirm light unless I am using a tripod. |

Thanks Eric for your finding as expected. I stayed with the 30D and never bought the 5D for that reason. Canon chip and its firmware somehow smoothed out too much the contrast and sharpness or something. I still have all my R lenses and patiently waiting for the R10

I'm also about to buy a R to EOS adapter and I found this:
High Precision Adapter Leica R Lens To Canon EOS Body - eBay (item 300224241548 end time May-19-08 05:27:00 PDT) Let me quote from the item description: " Be careful not to use follwing lenses which require extra mirror clearance, as the Canon mirror will hit the rear of the lens: 35mm Summilux-R, early 80-200mm f/4.5 zoom, 24mm Elmarit-R, current (2nd version) 19mm Elmarit-R, current 50mm Summilux-R, 15mm Elmar-R, 16mm fisheye." Does this apply only to this particular "Elefoto" adapter or does it also apply to all other adapters (especially the popular af confirm ones) on the market? It applies to all adaptors.

Thanks. So is this the full list or are there more lenses which conflict with the EOSs mirror.
Or lets ask like that, is it safe to use a 35-70mm F3.5 and a 280 F2.8 (older model, would have to check for the serial). |

I use the happypagehk version of the autofocus confirm adapter for my 80 f/1.4. Does not even come close to confirming autofocus. Way off. I have the Ee-s screen and that helps a lot on the 5D.

Do all the adapters mentioned above provide tight mechanical fit? I bought one a while ago from a different Chinese supplier that has a loose fit between the lens and the adapter. Although it does not seem to affect focus confirmation or image quality.

I use to use one made by Fotodiox. It had the advantage of a large release button. I read somewhere on the net that with a little filing of the back side of the pin (the one you see poke thru a hole on the back of the adapter when you push the release) you could just leave the one adapter on the camera and change lenses as if it was a R body. So thats what I did. Eventually I would borrow single focal Canon lenses from friends and that led me to pick them up one by one and off all my R lenses. A couple of my R lenses (like the 19 f/2.8 and the 28 f/2.8) might have been a little better distorsion-wise than my Canon's but the whole manual aperture thing got old really quick. A further problem I had was that the further I stopped down the lenses the more I would get exposure errors.

They are pretty tight, definitely safe to use (even with my 280 F2.8), no worries there. AF confirm works just nicely and image results are pretty amazing from what I can judge so far. |

Yes. There's no mechanical linkage between the lens and body.

haha... was a bit too fast... just tried the adapter on my 1D Mark IIn and the focus confirm doesn't seem to work, can't figure out how to use it. The focus confirm light just won't light up. Any hints?

Hmmmm.... there doesn't seem to be any pin missing (like it has broken off the adapter or something), I have two of the adapters and both look exactly the same so I don't think it's broken but I'll contact him anyway.
Does anyone have experience with Eric's adapters on 1D bodies? |
