HELP - How to Rescue Deleted Photos from DMR?

Dear All,

I was transferring pictures from my SD card to laptop and it asked - an image of this name already exists, do you want to replace it (something like that) and I chose the option - yes and pity the image was gone which was already there.

I used the R9+DMR combo.

I do have the SD card. Anyway to rescue the lost image?

Looking forward to hearing from you and thanking you in advance.

Always a shock, moments like that you describe. If you have not reformatted your card, all is not lost. If you have reformatted the card, try one of the free file recovery programmes (search the forum for the latest recommendations). The latter should succeed unless you have been shooting again and overwritten some of the lost data.

Back to your problem. I always import my new files giving them an unique reference such as Date-File number. If you adopt a similar practice in future, you should not receive such a computer message in the future.

Thank you very much for your reply. No, I have not reformatted the card. How to rescue the lost picture then? Where to search? Any specific link and step by step process/instruction would be of great help.

I understood the problem to be that by transferring new pictures from the card you overwrote an old picture already resident on the computer's disk storage. In that case, the missing picture would hopefully hide someplace on the disk and not on the SD card.

Sorry, I do not know how to recover lost files from the disk of your computer. I was pointing out that the picture must be on the other side so that other members who are more computer savy than me could find the next steps for you to perform.

A different approach: if the SD card has not been used since copying to the computer (*and sometimes even if it has), then it should suffice to copy the entire SD card to a different directory (folder) on the computer. ** It is highly unlikely that an SD card has duplicate file names, so there should be no prompt to overwrite.

IMHO it is an unfortunate practice to copy all SD cards into one directory. Copy each to its own directory, then work from there.

*Sometimes using a file recovery program against the SD card which has been used will find the yet-undisturbed deleted file.

** Or is it? There is a problem with M240 firmware writing duplicate names, but can it happen within the same SD card? Could that be one reason the M240 gets hung, however rarely?

I understand that the original image was within your computer HD!?

Have you tried TimeMachine (if you use it)?

Try putting the file name/number into Spotlight - it may produce the lost image..

Look/search in your iPhoto library..........

Use what I call beltsNbraces (UK terminology) - Use 2 SD cards (1 & 1A) after d/loading leave everything on the card, then use the other card, then when everything is Safe, format the 1st card just prior to a new shoot.........ie.. you always have your last shoot on a card..

I always d/load to a small Clean external HD before d/loading to my computers..........

I have been worried over this recently.

My solution is the Advanced rename option where I add a date to the image ID. Bridge/get photos from camera/ advanced rename option.

Probably something similar in LR

Also change the folder # in the camera. Default is Leica 100. Make it 101

All my Nikons come as DSCxxxxx. One changed to DSA Another to DSB

Have not done the Leicas yet.

That naming scheme is not fine enough. When two images have the same name, then the day, indeed the second can still be the same which changes nothing. I wrote several applications in which to guarantee unique file-names required names made within .02 second intervals.

Good luck on your mission.

You were saving pictures from the SD card to your computer. One (only one?) picture collided with a picture on your computer, because the names were the same.

Your SD card still carries the new picture of that name.

I would say, that you should search the backups of your computer.

If you don´t have made backups, it will be difficult.

I think, the operating system has assumed a change of the contents of the file with that name.

It is probable, that the new contents is written to another place on the disc and that the administration of the file structure has been updated. The old contents is named differently then - perhaps a question mark is added to the name - and the deleted marker is set.

For my Mac computer I have installed Time Machine, after a crash of my hard disc. The not yet saved pictures of the funeral of my brother were gone.

Time Machine saves every data change every hour without my action. I can reload old contents, if I wish.

Many thanks you all, so far am unable to rescue the picture :(

What tools have you tried so far? There are lots. Also check your local paper, might find a local data recovery service that might be useful if you can't figure out how to do it yourself. They might also help you setup with some kind of backup service.

But, you copied a file from the SD Card to your computer, overwriting a file on the computer. Unless you have more than one camera, then is it possible that you overwrote that file with the same file from the SD Card?
